Lowrance keeps rebooting

Can anyone tell me why my lowrance HDS5 fish finder/GPS keeps rebooting? It doesn't seem to happen when I'm under way, but most often when motor is off and we're anchored or drifting. Once it reboots, it doesn't respond properly when I go into the menu and try to change a setting (like going from chart to sonar). If I turn it off for a good spell, say 20 minutes, then it works for a few minutes. Then the rebooting starts again. I tried turning off the batteries to power it down and reset things. That didn't work. When the problem starts, it reboots every couple of minutes.

Anyone?

Try giving Lowrance Customer service a call, or look on their website under the FAQ section. Unfortunately Lowrance's customer service is pretty poor. Long wait times on the phone. Or, you can try one of the Lowrance forums.
That's why it's Humminbird for me.

I am also a Humminbird owner but possibly your battery is not fully charged or has a bad cell. When the boat is running you are getting 12 volts, when it is off the does the voltage drop?

One problem I do have with Humminbird is poor connectors. When in rough water the unit turns off and I found that the power plug does not fit tight. Possible you have a problem with the connector or a loose inline fuse.

Just a couple of things to consider.

Good luck

Funny you should mention that about the Humminbird. I just installed a brand new 898c si combo and used it for the first time yesterday. Periodically it would alarm low voltage and did turn off by itself twice. I hope this will not be a recurrent problem with a $1200 fishfinder. It did mark pleny of striper which I can now tell from the Herring over my Lowrance X70A but I still couldn't catch em.

Both batteries are charged and putting out 14 volts. I've tried only one as well as both. Hasn't helped. I'll check the connectors and the fuse. 13 year old boat I just got so there are going to be plenty of surprises.

Yes...83 and 200 Hz. I almost bought the 1198c si but when I compared this one to the 998 and 898 the only difference was screen size and $500 buck with each step up. I figured a 7" screen was ok.

I guess I have to try that setting a little longer. I had it on there and didn't really like it. Didn't realize that could be the difference in picking up the herring though. Theres a whole lot of stuff in those little fish finders!

FYi, with reference to the very beginning of this thread where I asked about my Lowrance constantly rebooting, Lowrance customer service said it's a known issue that is solved by downloading and installing their 4.1 update. Will be installing the file tomorrow and will give it a good test this weekend.
