About West Point Lake Georgia

West Point Lake is a 26,000-acre mainstream Chattahoochee River impoundment that has been in existence since 1974, located an hour southwest of Atlanta. The US Army Corps of Engineers operates the lake, including public access areas and other recreational opportunities. Although most of West Point Reservoir is in Georgia, the lake lies on a 45 mile stretch of the Chattahoochee River between Franklin and West Point Georgia. The lake has a shoreline of more than 500 miles equaling over 26,000 acres of water surface and runs along and across the Georgia/Alabama State line. The lake is controlled by the Corps of engineers and was impounded in 1974 in order to provide flood control, hydroelectric power, navigation, fish and wildlife development, and general recreation for Southwest Georgia.

West Point Lake offers an abundance of wildlife and a number of ways to enjoy it. When the lake was created, a forested valley was flooded, trees and other structures were left standing to provide excellent fish habitat. Man-made fish attractors also improve fishing at the lake.
The West Point Lake Coalition was founded in 2000 with the goal of promoting and protecting West Point Lake for the use of everyone in and around the community. Our focuses are on lake safety, water level, cleanliness and environmental protection, and overall enjoyment and promotion of the lake.
