Texas poachers net jail, fines for illegal NM hunt

09/07/2007

By The Associated Press

RATON, N.M. — A judge has sentenced two Texas men to 90 days in jail and $10,750 in fines for what a game officer called the most blatant poaching case he's seen in a decade.
State District Judge John P. Paternoster, who called the crimes "a serial act of terrorism against the people of Colfax and Union counties," also ordered Fort Worth residents Kolby Knight, 21, and Jonathon Seamen, 22, to write letters of apology to citizens of the two counties to be published in local newspapers, the state Department of Game and Fish said Thursday.
Both men's rifles also were surrendered to the department.
The men entered into agreements Aug. 29 in which each pleaded to unlawful killing of antelope, waste of game, unlawful killing out of season, unlawful possession of game without a license, hunting without a license, unlawful hunting out of season and tampering with evidence, said game officer Clint Henson.
Game and Fish officers received an anonymous call last November that Knight and Seamen were returning home from a hunting trip in Idaho and planned to kill pronghorn antelope as they traveled from Raton to Clayton. An undercover officer found the vehicle described by the informant, and heard rifle shots as it stopped near groups of antelope along a highway.
Officers who stopped the vehicle in Clayton said they found Knight and Seamen in possession of the head of a deer illegally killed in Idaho. Officers later found five antelope the pair had killed northeastern New Mexico, and found where the men tried to hide two antelope heads they planned to take to Texas. Officers also matched ballistic evidence along the 90-mile crime scene with the men's rifles.

They should have gotten 90 days per animal in each jurisdiction.
I wish they'd run into a judge who hunts.
