I presume you live in the corridor where motorized transport of herring for bait is allowed (i.e., you can catch em, take them home, and bring them back some time later). I would say don't salt it. If its short term, week or two, why bother. Long term, salt lowers the freezing temperature to about 22. So, if your freezer fluctuates above that temp, it would thaw. Without salt, it would have to get to 32. I think the State wants salting because it kills every living thing in the bait. Just sayin.

Im down germantown hudson way. Your a bit north of me. But if you ever make your way down some people come down to riverbasin im 8 min away i would catch up with you.
