There's a lot more to fishing than "the spot". So many factors effect when and where to fish that you can tell someone exact coordinates where you were hammering fish and they'll catch nothing. A lot can be learned from interpretting the info you get and knowing who to listen to. Plus does anyone really tell everyone exactly where they caught a huge fish.
First off, Im brand new to striper fishing and surf casting... last year was my first. I was immediately hooked (no pun intended). Im learning and still very new but, I certainly wouldnt want anyone telling me exactly where to fish. Its trial and error. I like that the forums teach me about rods, reels, type of line to use, bait or rigs, night or day etc. Forgive me if I don't use all the right terminology. Having said that, I voted for circumstances. If I was to find a hot spot (lol... impossible since I've only been to one place several times) I may share it with someone I knew or PM someone who was being helpful to me. Last year, I only caught one keeper (31.75") but a lot of almost legals and the rest were small guys and a ton of fricken crab... grrr. Either way I catch and release. I just have fun and love the feeling when I feel a strike or see my pole bend and reel that sucker in! This year, I will keep one or two since I have learned they are good eating. So, if anyone wants to tell me how the moon phases play into the fish, how the tides effect getting some good bites or the best way to keep my darn clams on my hook... Im all ears.
Heres to wishing everyone an amazing season!
Take care,
Stripergurl
P.S. Im also new to the forum and this was my first post! Cherry's Broken!!! :icon_thumright::icon_thumright::icon_thumright:

Hey Roccus! Im trying to get it... lol. In the Salisbury area actually. Can't wait for the lil' buggers to get their fins up here! Thanks for the warm welcoming!
I had previous plans that day but my neighbor and bf went to the show. They said they had a good time. Sorry I missed it.
Did some freshwater fishing this weekend... mostly yellow perch and my bf hooked a sweet bass! Heading out tomorrow again... so glad I have Wednesdays off. Happy fishing!

We headed up to Plum Island today for some surfcasting and it was the first time I've been skunked. Not even a nibble. However, I did find out that those little Rainbow Loom elastics worked great at holding my sea clams on... YAY!!! Currently, we only have a small 16' boat and we put her in last year at the Salisbury Reservation. Stayed strictly in the "no wake" zone of the river and it was scary as hell. People weren't following the no wake rules at all. Now, we are looking for a used boat that is a bit more sea worthy. I've only fished for stripers from the shore so, needless to stay, Im anxious to try it from a boat. Thinking about heading up to Salisbury on Mother's Day. My bf said we could do anything I wanted for Mother's Day and of course I said... I wanna go fishing. LOL. Hurry up and get the "Honey Do's" done. John and I would love to meet ya sometime.

The no wake zone is mis leading it only applies between the #10 can and the badgers and again from the ice breaker up river...16' boat is plenty big... I fished a 16' amesbury skiff from 1972 until 1978 when i bought my current boat.. The Warrior princess.. an 18' jon Dory... i went everywhere with that 16... i even hand lined a 400lb tuna with it..
You can fish joppa flats with that boat or trailer it over to PI sound... lots of options over there as well.. I only fish nights during the week.. too many day time looney toons and weekend crazies for me.. I'm 30 minutes garage to boat...life is good!... if you go this weekend... try up off of deer island there should be a few fish around by then...if you guy's want to drive down some night when the big girls get here.. i'd be happy to take the two of you out eeling... once you learn how to handle them... you'll never use a clam againshake.gif...unless your flounder fishing!

Roc you Rock! LOL! Thank you so much for all of your suggestions and your offer. We would love to go out eeling with ya! So kind of you. We will need to wait until our kiddos (12 and 14) are out of school so we can send them to the grandparents for the night. Woo Hoo! Of course we will help with fuel costs and such.
As far as this weekend goes, we are taking the kiddos fishing with us so we are planning on just surfcasting. Any areas you could suggest? Lack of knowledge on our part so we go to the areas we are familiar with. I was trying to look at maps online to find someplace new but not knowing were we are allowed to go makes it difficult. Any suggestions would be great.
Thank you so much for all of your help. I'm super excited!

your children are the age of my grand children... Deer island is still a possibility. your young in are old enough to be careful... Mosey park in Amesbury also is a good place...when the schoolies show up they head up river... you still may get them along the sand spit on Plum Island, but that place draws a crowd.... I think the reservation is open on the refuge ( check the surfland web sight) if you want the true beach front surf casting experience... I'll PM you with another option that I dont want to put on the net...

hey striper gurl welcome to the forum, yes Roccus is the Man, just started reading his 1000 + posts (I'm now in year 2007)of his threads. All of your questions are dead on, moon phases, tides, winds etc.. and so the learning starts. I"ve only been fishing for 40 years so I'm still a:sign4: and hate to give bad info, which I'm very good at, so. look for Solunar fishing charts, usually they tell about moon phases and how they effect , tides , fish, wildlife, some people etc,, . Good luck and tight lines:GrayWingSmiley:
Fishing information IS given away and displayed enough throughout the internet.
I"ve been fishing since I was three or four years old, learned to READ magazines and became a very proficient all around outdoorsman starting at 14 yrs.. old.
There are pieces of me left behind from 40+ Hard learned years of fishing.
Been through 4 hurricanes in 3 months learning how to fish in Florida.
Slept in 22deg. weather in a tent in the Adirondacks of NY in Nov.,fishing for Brooktrout.
Almost severly hurt myself fishing for Stripers in a storm on CapeCod., got so many close calls and near misses and that's not even counting the HUNDREDS of hours I research the subject of my passion of fishing during the pre, during and post season. The physical labor is tremendous due to the fact that I fish 80% of the time without a boat, ( I do have boats) And last year I attached myself to a Striper down to the bone of my middle finger via 7" pencil popper.
And YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT ??? ABOUT WHERE??
I do write articles about fishing basically geared torward the Newbie, and it is good starter info, and if you are reading it you are no threat to me even if I'm fishing right next to you, I have even GIVEN my pole to people who weren't catching fish.
But please, have respect to yourself and put the time in.
Yes, lines should be drawn.tard.gif
this is a touchy subject in a forum that people are checking specifically for locating schools of fish. Im the guy doin as much research as physically possible and pushing my body to the extremes puttin in hard work and long days. I have earned every bit of experiance, knowledge, and honey holes that i now have.Hard work like this can go to ruin by publically postin locations.when you post something on an online forum its much more extreme than postin a pic or info at a local baitshop. i believe on sharing my passion and want people to be able to catch fsh like i do but certain knowledge must be dealt to the right hands. theres no filter for what info gets passed on via the internet. so what might seem like helpin some buddies out turns into anyone in the world can see what you just wrote. When im on here im just tryin to get a better idea of for trackin schools of fish or get a few or give a few tips. keep your post vague enough so that people can still get the info they need. only the dedicated, skilled, and deserving anglers will be able to locate your honeyhole unless you burn that spot. but anyone willin to put there time in is more than welcome to fish besides me...pm or emails are best for sensative info, ive watched my favorite spots get burned and harder to fish everyyear. perfect example is the guys that got busted in catskill poachin walleye.they werent even local guys, but heard through the grapevine all about the fishing, i busted them guys and now there takin extra steps to add strict regulations to protect them fish
There WAS a spot in albany that was decent and easily accessable but the slobs and party animals blew it up.no fishing is allowed there any more.so use descretion when sharing spots
I have strong feelings on this subject. I think it is up to an INDIVIDUAL whether they share their spot or not. It should not be dictated by any 'governing' body. That is called censorship. Certainly respect the individual who decides not to share critical details of their trip. However, those that do should not be chastised. I was just 'flamed' a few days ago on the *assbarn because of my opinion. The problem there is the forum is run by the sponsors who don't want individuals posting the spots that they followed the sponsors (party and charter boats) to.
FWIW, *assbarn is fading. Not much in way of interesting topics anymore.
