Im new to surfcasting and a new angler as well. My current setup im using is a 10ft Penn Battle 3 combo with the 8000 reel with 40lb braid. I have been chunking bunker and some live eel. But i still have not caught anything. Im specifically trying to target large stripers. But i have heard that you really need to go at night if your trying to fish large stripers from the shore, i have been night fishing a couple times already. Im from Rhode Island and want to know what rigs people use for shore fishing stripers. And any other tips people are willing to share I would really appreciate it. One of the biggest question i have because i heard people say you should be out every night fishing for the big boys, does that include during low tide as well even if you have to wade out a bit to get to deeper water to cast?

Hi, Welcome to the forum. I use a fish finder rig when fishing fresh cut bait for stripers. I also live line a live small spot on this rig. Frozen bait turns to mush fast in the surf. I mostly cast plugs for stripers at inlets, pockets alongside inlets. Eels I only cast at night from the rocks at inlets. Get John Skinners book on striper fishing, it covers it all. I never, at least were I fish have caght stripers on Eels from the surf. The big boys like rough surf. But I have caught stripers to 28" to 34" on fish bite blood worms while fishing for Whiting, and spot. Just watch and be safe wading out to cast and reach the sand bar if there is any. Learn how to read the beach. Tight lines.
