I know most surf rods you by in a store have a approx a 25-28 in handle. I just got sized up for a St Croix LSS106MHMF2. I am going out on a limb here I placed the handle at 19.5 inches up from the butt end. It felt good with the shorter handle while working a lure. Will this hurt me in the long run on casting distance? I have some freinds the use a st croix big dog musky rod it has a 18 inch handle and they have very good luck with them. Hopefully this will not be a experiment gone bad.

It's all about how it feels to you. If you handled the blank to determine good hand position for casting as well as retrieving, then you should be all set.
