Fished 5-8. Nice slow outgoing with no wind. What a difference. Drifted through a few spots and found a hungry pod. Went 4 for 5. Low 30” fish. Feisty and powerful. Super fun. Water at 61.9. Gonna push the limits this week and try to get out everyday.

What is the key to drifting? Everytime I drift I always lose my rig. I drop to the bottom and then crank it up around 4’

I always hold the pole. And always touch the bottom every minute or less. and adjust. Also get an idea of the bottom of its rocks mud rip rap etc. then you know to stay up. I weight up to keep straight down. 3,4, 5oz, Whatever it takes.

If you're having trouble look at charts to try to find a nice straight(ish) run.

Use as much weight as you need to keep your line relatively straight up and down. Sometimes I have to use 8oz and could probably use more.

Drop it to the bottom and come up a foot or two. I like to reel down so my rod tip is close to the water and then lift it so its horizontal. Drop your tip frequently to tap bottom so you know you're still in the zone (lift it back up quickly so you don't snag)

With the exception of really warm water and big feisty schools, the bite dies down when the tide rips. It definitely doesn't mean they won't strike though. Regardless, if you're anchored up and things are slow give it a shot.

Oh, Personally, I prefer to hook the herring through the nose or up through the roof of the mouth for drifting.
1)It seems to be a more natural presentation.
2)They stay on the hook better in the event of a quick strike or a pop-off.

Oh oh... a drift sock can realllllly come in handy!

Hope this helps.
