Thanks Brian. Still blows my mind. I spent how many years chasing 40”+? Totally worth deadline with the naysayers giving me guff.
Been getting out here and there over the past week whenever possible. Yesterday morning I marked the biggest schools I’ve seen this season. I managed to go 6/10 with 43, 42, 39, 36, 42 and 44 before they raced back to the channel when the sun was up for a bit. Went back out for an hour before dark with my wife and went 2/8 (pop-offs and cut leaders. We were definitely over sharp rocks or zebra mussels) with 31.5 and a fat 39.5 that she battled for.

So far this run we’ve put 43 Stripers in the boat with 10 being 40”+. Definitely not the quantity last year brought but the quality has been amazing.

The bite seems to be getting better but the large schools are not together yet.yesterday Norrie was loaded but the bite was tough for the screens we had. Today the bite in Norrie was much better but only before and after slack tide…once the current got moving it died. We only got 6 yesterday but 21 today mostly around 30” and great fighters. Water temps hit 56.7. We did a dusk drift from Pirates to Trap rock and like the morning we didn’t mark a fish at all…..dead…No bites. We will be back out early as slack tide tomorrow is 6 am.

Took my wife and a buddy out after work for a few hours tonight. Docked and scapped up some bait while waiting for the wind to die down a bit. Marked some really nice schools after tide change and went 9/14 with 41.5" and 43" being the largest. Hoping this keeps up for a bit.

The bite in Norrie has exploded wide open with all size fish from 13" to 44". We boated 82 fish the last few days and had a blast. This week the fish leaving the river are feeding on the Ebb tide and the ones still traveling north are feeding on the Flood tide so the bite was on all day for the last 2 days. The very pale sandy colored fish are the ones leaving. The get pale after being in the fresh water for a while. The fresh arrivals are a nice silver color that has a sheen to it. The males are hanging in the channel while the females are tight to shore waiting for their eggs to mature. There were a couple of spawns in Norrie this week but nothing major.....its gonna boil in the next few days. All this whining this week about no bite.....everyone forgets that the bite shuts down before they spawn and this year we also had a week of low pressure which further shuts the bite down. The post spawn fish are ravaging the baits as they are hungry and need to get some nutrition for the trip out. One a few occasions they hit 2 rods. Water temps started the week at 55 degrees and peaked yesterday at 61 degrees. That 58 degree mark seems to wake them up a bit. Tight lines everyone and have fun.

Got out for an hour and a half last night. Had to call it short for a board meeting I had to attend but managed to get on a nice fat 46" 36 pounder. Getting stoked for the weekend. Should be a good one. Tight lines to all.

I traveled up to Esopus area for the first time and we manged 3 on Friday, 8 today. Our 5yr old reeled a fiesty 4lber schoolie and was a trooper all day Fri. I took friends out today and lost tons of nibblers, but got up to 9lber. Every fish was male! So strange. I saw one with a red spot but was still spirting milk. We missed most of the early incoming but caught when the outgoing picked up.
We saw a 30lb+ get released right next to us in the area (with all the trollers) right at the outgoing. Should have got a pic... Definitely a great day!

Glad we finally found the schoolies up here, great action to keep guests busy.

The bite continues to be fantastic up in Norrie on all tides. Water temps hit 62 today and the spawning is well under way. It went on all day today north of esopus island despite the 56 boats I counted….it didn’t seem to slow them down. We boated another 41 with most between 29 and 37”…..screamers and strong fighters. Milton produced a slew of 40+ inch fish but finding fish was tough……these fish are heading out and if your lucky enough to be in their path it’s a good day but most struggled there. Back out at 5 am.

I fished out of Kingston on Saturday. We tried up near the bridge. We found the sandbar. We also tried down near the opening of the Rondout Creek and just south of the lighthouse. We then went south (following the fleet) and continued to two more spots. In all areas, we marked fish, but we only managed one catfish on the herring chunks we were using. There was a lot of debris in the water. It was tough to fish without getting decaying leaves stuck to our line, bait or sinkers. We tried floating baits behind the boat without weight. We tried fishing them on the bottom. We had nearly zero bites. The boats that seemed to be catching striped bass were the boats that were trolling with down riggers. It is not my preferred way to fish, but it seemed to be putting fish in the boat. It was not a total loss. I was able to learn a bit about scapping and where to use sabikis to catch herring.
We fished Rogers Pt to Norrie yesterday and it was still good. Lots of fish traveling both directions circling the area getting ready for more spawning. Sunday night we had some black screens at the south tip of Esopus Island. The Marlboro to Poughkeepsie area continues to be a desert....there are big fish there but no steady flow of fish. Going back out now. Water temps yesterday were 61-62.

The stacks garbage plant was good last evening as you past us on your way in , best screens I've seen 7 fish mid twenties to mid thirties one female 40 . Pulled the boat headed to the salt !
5/11 to 5/15 report...
My wife and I got our 12yo sons out for a couple trips. They were each able to put a few fish in the boat. My son tied his PB with a skinny 38.5" and my step son beat his PB with a 39".

Had a banger am trip with the wife Friday. We put 16 on deck (most caught by her) and lost countless more due to pop-offs and cut lines. She beat her PB with a beautiful 42.5". Can't imagine how many we would have caught if we stayed out. Glad she decided to be "sick" ..the other days she took off earlier in the run were uneventful. She definitely puts in her time and deserves this.

Lots of smaller fish showed up this past week. With them came the dreaded run and drops, grabbing it just long enough to kill your herring.
The ones that are able to swallow the bait are feisty as can be making for exciting trips.

There were other days out there that Im skipping over. I know I'm forgetting details as I haven't been posting daily this season but these were the highlights. Regardless, it's been an odd year but fun none the less. Hoping it stays decent throughout the weekend.

"We don need no stinkin' herring."
Last night had seven hits, one on for a few minutes before the streamer and line parted company and caught 3, a 24, a 27 and a 28 incher.

The fishing has been good until the wind and low pressure shut most of the bite down today. Several nice sunny days lead to a few high double digit days with many in the mid 30s. Today the wind was brutal but we still managed to catch them. Rogers was pretty empty and the mass of fish seem to be around the Esopus Lighthouse. The post spawned fish are also definitely moving south as Newburgh has some fish caught in the last 2 days. I also marked significant fish in the Milton stretch and managed a dusk 34”. Tonight we marked a massive movement of tiny fish south….either herring or shad but the school’ running from 10 to 20 ft ran from Poughkeepsie to Marlboro. Water temps were 62 today. Tight lines…back out at 5am.

Still up north hung4wheeler? I was wondering if they will start thinning out in the Esopus to Kingston area. Perhaps this cooler weather will keep them around longer.
