We spent the last 3 days on the water. Friday started out nice and we caught some quality fish but then the N wind kicked in and shut it down.....the weekend brought some nasty/cold/rainy weather but we still went out and still caught fish up to 38". Other than some light rain Saturday was quite calm. Sunday we quit early due to nasty winds and weather coming in. We ended up with 36 fish for the weekend. Water temps held steady at around 56 degrees but hit 54.5 today. Today most of the fish were around Poughkeepsie to Rogers Point but running deeper. We set our lines to 24-30 ft at Rogers to get hits which is pretty typical for that area due to the overall depth being 144 ft and the thermocline is deeper.

Looks like the action is going to be North of Newburgh bay again this year. Spoke with DEC crew on the water and they have no answers for this location shift. Have taken only two fish since starting in mid-April, but both were over 40”. Just can’t seem to locate any decent fish from Banerman’s to the steel.

I can tell you exactly why its changed...................a few years ago...I believe 2018 there was an 8 million gallon sewage dump in Poughkeepsie. I was out at night when it happened...it was awful. As that "crap" went down river it started to settle from Marlboro to Newburgh. This happened as the fish were coming up the river...well you can guess what happened. The did not settle in the "shit" water and proceeded North of the Mid Hudson Bridge to spawn. These fish are creatures of habbit and go back to the same place every year. That event completely changed where they go back to for many, many years to come. Over the last few years some of the bigger girls still reside in the Marlboro/Milton stretch but many of the 5 yo schoolies who were born that year go north.

That is a hillarious but sad hypothesis. You think that only happened once? I sure hope so though... Interestingly we had an amazing 2019 in the Cornwall to Marlboro stretch, then the next two years were so-so. Last year mid-may I couldn't find any schools all over Newburgh bay and had to go north of Marlboro. The bay was deserted a weekend morning with nice weather. Luckily got one nice 12lber before the bite died.

It was May 2, 2019 which would line up with what u said. I have fished that stretch every day for 20 years so yes I can affirmatively say this was the first time it happened to that extent ….. it stunk for days….and made the news.

What's going to happen when they dump 1 million gallons of radioactive water from Indian Point into the river?

Indian Point always had a freshwater intake/output running while in operation. If you've ever been close I found the fish loved the warm water discharge, but the National Guard wouldn't let you close to them...

I'm sure the fish have been getting a warm bath on their way north every year, probably didn't bat an eye (or three).

I’m a bit late to S247 this year. Kept getting an error each time I tried to post. Seems to be working now. Odd.

New boat and a late start this season. Been getting out here and there. Bait has been the biggest problem but we’ve been keeping our lines wet. So far we’ve put 20 on deck mostly 35”+ with 4 over the 40” mark. Hopping to add to that number significantly over the next couple weeks.

Had to go swap out a battery after work yesterday. The creek was totally blown out and killed all of my herring. I had no intentions of fishing but I figured I would try to freshen my bait pen. I took a spin up River, docked up, scapped a few and decided to go out for the Hell of it. Ended up being a beautiful evening. I tossed out a couple poles not expecting anything.

Well, my reel started screaming. I set the hook and watched my spool get robbed of line. 7 times I had it close to the boat (no visual given the chocolate milk) and it would hammer down and head back out. I didn’t keep track of the time but I would estimate I fought this fish for 30-40 mins. Wasn’t sure what to think as the majority of the bigger fish I’ve caught just swam down heavy and didn’t run like this.
Finally got it to the boat and got a glimpse, shit myself, tossed my phone on the dash on record, grabbed the net, failed the first scoop, fought off another run and nailed the second scoop.
The fish was longer than my 48” measuring device. I had to make a mark on my boat and use a tape measure when I got back to the dock.
While I was releasing it I yelled to the boat ahead of me that it was 49” not yet accounting for the overhang.

The official length and weight… 50.75” 55lbs (weighed in a net with a boga grip and net weight deducted) Took a ton of time making sure she was good and watched her swim away strong.

I know the “bs.. no way.. f that guy..” pic responses are coming but idc. If you know me you know lol. I would do some unspeakable things to have had someone out with me to get a better pic and to have just seen her. For reference, I’m 6’ 250lbs.

I crushed my old PB of 42.75 37lbs and skipped right over the 40lb club. ****…. I’m in shock and don’t know what to do with myself lol.

That is amazing congrats. Going out for the first time this weekend once I finish boat maintenance. Hope we can break the 30lb club this season 😊.

Another two fun days on the river with 21 more fish hitting the deck despite the touch bite due to low pressure....it will only get better from here. Today we put some quality fish on board....many in the 28-32 inch range. Water temps in PoK dropped to 52.5 today. All our fish were caught in Poughkeepsie on the tide switch from Ebb to Flood. The bite completely died on the Ebb tide. The fish that were hanging around Roger's point 2 days ago mostly vacated. The fish also dispersed on the Ebb tide and what we saw absolutely had lockjaw. The low pressure has the bite slow but it will pick up from here. Sammy is just loving the boat time.

The fishing has been tough but they are biting for a short time at the start of the flood tide. The place to be today was Trap Rock to Wappingers. A bunch of 40+ in fish were caught in a small window. The bite mostly died during the ebb tide. Water temps were 54 today. Tomorrow is the Hope for Warriors benefit for Veterans Tournament with a 50k bounty on a 50+ in fish.

First trip out finally with the family today. Checked up north around Marlboro area and some likely areas were completely blank and others had scattered inactive big marks. Our 5yr old landed one Blue cat (...I mean "non-striper species" ;)). Didn't stick around for the outgoing tide to end. We ran down to Newburgh for the incoming tide and caught in our normal drift spots; two "big daddies" i.e. males at 8lb, but no "big mommies". On the second fish we actually had three rods pulling line but the 5yr old peed her pants right before and we only landed one :cautious:. Our 7yr old did a great job reeling the first male with several nice runs.

Seems to be still in pre-spawn behavior, good sign!

P.S. still no Newburgh Bay schoolies this year?! Are people finding them north of Poughkeepsie?

Just got off the water after 3 days and the low pressure as well as the staging to spawn has shut much of the bite down. There were load of fish from Rogers to the Esopus Lighthouse but for the screens the bite was not that great. Sat night we spent the night floating outside the Rondout creek and the whole area was boiling with spawning...under our bow....behind the motors... literally on the side of the boat. This explains a good part of the poor bite as several days before they spawn they are not interested in eating but the days after as they start to head downriver they will go into feeding frenzies. The Hope for Warriors tournament was won with a 41" fish. Putting vets onto their first Striper is the most amazing feeling. Water temps were temps began at 55 degrees on Sat and did hit 57 degrees in Norrie today but dropped back down to 55 tonight. Milton again produced some big fish up to 40 lbs/45" but the bite was terrible...if you were lucky enough to be in the right place when the big girl came by you were lucky....but no loaded screens as Rogers.

Had a very productive 5 hours on the river Saturday with multiple fish in the mid 30's hitting hard and a 44" 30 lb male slamming a live eel, providing some great action. It was a race to land the fish before being run over by a tanker.
Sunday on the other hand was a different story. I think there are many more good days coming.

Wow, 30lb male! I imagine that could have left a big mess to clean up on your deck though :ROFLMAO:
