Went out with an old buddy yesterday and today. He's pretty much responsible for getting me hooked on this run when I was a kid. Being a shore fisherman, it was cool to teach him some boat work. We managed to put 18 in the boat with the biggest measuring in at 40.5".
Lots of dinks around but still catching quality hogs. Had a follower jump in the net this afternoon. Hitting it as much as possible this weekend.

Season total currently stands at 123

It just keeps getting better……yesterday (May20) Norrie to Esopus lighthouse was on fire. The overcast rain really turned on the bite and we were on a hue highway of fish rounding the lighthouse…the bite was non stop with fish up to 33 inches. These fish quickly moved south into the Poughkeepsie Milton stretch and today (May 21) the bite there was great with fish up to 40” and 30 lbs. most were in the 22-29” range and great fighters. The best bite was during the ebb into flood tide. The bite slowed when the tide was moving. Water temps hit 65 in Esopus and 67 today in Milton. There are still lots of fish moving south from above but these 90 degree days will speed up their exodus.

16 more hit the deck over the past two days. 3 of which were over 40".
My buddy got one a hair under 41 yesterday and I beat my PB landing a 42.75" 37lb this morning.
All the action was in the am. Couldn't get any solid hookups the rest of the day despite marking tons of schools and throwing every variation I had at them.

That may end up being it for my season. I'm going to head out after work for a few days hoping to get a few more though. We'll see.

Season total thus far: 139

Wow, amazing season BUB! Glad to hear I wasn't the only one having trouble in the afternoon. I took 5 other colleagues out hoping to put them on some schoolies in Newburgh bay but it was deserted! By 7:30am there were only two other trailers. Went to same spots from last year and the fish were very thin. It took until 10am before we found the fish and armada north of the bridge (maybe they all listened to DocZ!) We had one strong 30ft run on an eel w/o hookup and then my colleague hooked up his first ever catch, a powerful 10lb male that gave quite a fight. After that we had trouble staying on any schools for long and we were searching the rest of the afternoon without a bite.

Fun but a little dissapointed for the other 4. Where are all the schoolies? Still far north?? That might be my last go for the season. Could only make it 3 trips this year.

Thanks.

Tons of little slots showed up in my area over the past week. The majority of females I caught and witnessed caught on other boats have yet to spawn as well. Only one occasion of following to the net.

Side note.. Anyone enter the "Hudson River Classic" contest this year or years prior??
I really wish I read the rules prior to joining.

My first fish (42.50") was knocked down to 42" because their application messed up. They still saw my pics/video and knocked me.
My last fish (42.75") was knocked down to 42.50" putting me in a 6 way tie for 4th place lol.

They're confirming submissions of measurements with the mouth open and "measurements will be rounded DOWN to the nearest 1/2"..." What kind of bullshit contest is this? Lol

The schoolies from the north are making their way down but they seen to be blowing through the Milton to Newburgh stretch pretty fast. They are hanging around for a tide or two then continuing to run south. The best bite has been the end of Flood into the Ebb tide. Yesterday the Poughkeepsie stretch was pretty loaded with a good bite.

Today was tough fishing for the Poughkeepsie to Newburgh stretch….. many of the fish have moved out. This morning there were large pods moving south on the West Bank just north of the Newburgh Beacon bridge. It slowed from there and this afternoon it was dry. We fished the evening in the Milton stretch and did pick a bunch in the channel but the fish were far and few between….what was coming by was big though. We did manage to get a bunch of schoolIra and a few in the mid 30s but we worked hard for them. There are still lots of fish up north coming down but there will be lots of gaps. They seem to be traveling in small pods or singly and not schooling as in the past…tight lines…water temps 65 today. Still no spawning from Milton to Newburgh and the makes we caught were still full of milt.

I've heard all sorts of bad things about the NY Classic which is run by the same person.

He didn't like my response to his email that I attached.

I said "Tell DEC it was tough to hold their mouth closed" so you rounded down to 28"

The "rounding up or down makes no difference" comment made my ****ing head pop lol. It absolutely matters when a 42.50 is a tie with a 42.75.

Anyway.. lesson learned.

Got out for a few hours in the am yesterday and today.

Yesterday: Struggled to scap from shore, which has been my go to for a couple weeks. Only caught a few. Luckily I brought some frozen that I have been saving because there were tons and I mean TONS of dinks around chomping down anything that hit the water. You can only cut your chunks so small.
Just when I thought I was done, I started marking giant schools of BB herring that I was able to jig up. If I had more time I can't imagine how many I could have boated.
Ended the day putting 18 on deck with the largest being 34" and 38.5" spawned out females.
For the first time in my 20 years I witnessed mass spawning. Absolutely incredible!

Today: Unfortunately the 3 herring I saved in my bait pen from yesterday died. I had no more frozen, couldn't scap anything from shore and was only able to jig up 3. I quickly lost two of the live to catfish who gobbled them whole and ran with them (30"-35"). They we're absolutely brutal today. If a striper didn't hit my bait within 5 mins it was gone. Given my limited bait, I had to "set" the hook for every bump/run and recast if there was no hookup just to keep it away.
Did the best that I could and boated 4 stripers up to 33.5".

The FF screen was looking pretty empty. Bait is becoming a PITA..
Unless I end up screwing around this weekend, finding bait and dodging all the Googans, I think it's safe to say my season is over. Other than catching a monster I can't imagine topping this year..

Stripers boated: 161 (previous best was 59)

BIggest: 42.75" 37#

Over 40"+: 27

Most in a day: 21

Each of my guests with the exception of one broke their most in a day and size PBs.
What. A. Run.
