My little brother lives in Anchorage and did that for a couple seasons. Definately a trial of strength in more ways than one....

I went toggin' this past feb in 20 degree weather and my first thought was how do those crab guys do what they do? And I was fishing for eight hours not working my fingers to the bone for weeks!! Takes a special breed.

I used to go to church with Peter Liske, he Captains Lady Alaska, one of the boats that was featured last year.
He'd work the season, come home and help Jo Anne raise their children, as well as quite a few adopted kids.
My wife Kathy works with Peter's sister in law, Jody, at Teen Challenge in Cincinnati. Jody's son spent a summer w/Uncle Peter on the boat, some great pictures. He was in most of them, on of them he looks asleep on his feet, that would definitely be a challenge.

My brother was stationed in Alaska for 2 yrs with the coast guard. The helo and boat crews didn't look forward to the opening of the crabbing season. Lots of emergency calls for about every injury you can think of particularly in rough weather. He told me the Captains of the crabbing boats were excellent but the name of the game was catch crabs. Gotta give this years season a big kool-aid man "OHH YEAHHH". I can't get enough of this show, I watch new shows, repeats over and over. I love it. Not a big fan of Blake or the "Wizard" all together. Northwestern is my favorite. Captain Sid runs a good crew although it seems there will be a fight between the greenhorn and a veteran. Teasers showed fists flying. Any other hardcore fans?

Having worked a dragger on Georges in the winter, I have a big appreciation on what it takes to do the job.... most people will never know.... try swinging a 20lb ice hammer for 4 hours on 4 hours sleep or less... it gives ya a real perspective on things..

It's a toss up for me between the Hansens and Hillstrand boys...

Well after watching the first 2 hours of the season and seeing the Hilstrands rig a truck to the Cornelia Marie's buoys, they move up on the list of favorite boats! I laughed so hard that was hilarious. For anyone who didn't see it, the Hilstrands from the Time Bandit found a string of Cornelia Marie's pots, took out the last pot in the string, and replaced it with a demolished pick up truck! When Cornelia Marie had her pots pulled on that string the truck was pulled up with it. Can't wait to see the revenge for this one. Saw Ed Hansen bite the head off another herring, and Jake the greenhorn bit the belly out...I'll stick to eating steak, burgers etc...

Season finale
Final thoughts.

Horribly - two weeks after the Crab season ended the Alaskan Ranger fishing for mackeral lost rudder control, took on water and sunk. All 47 aboard went into the Bearing Sea. The Coast Guard rescued 42.
The job that the USCG does is phenomenal and is due the recognition that it deserves.
