Default Some might remember how excited

I got when I saw the 14 inch jointed redhead Pikie Roc uses. Here's my version complete with rattle in the forward half. Also a GooGoo and a off center turned swimmer with a pikie lip.

Nice job. I actually seen Roc's MONSTER plugs in real life in Carver a few weeks ago. Guys (Roc and Zeema) you need to put something on the side of the BIGGER plugs when you take a pic to show how big they really are. I've seen a few of Roc's online. But seeing them in person they are just HUGE almost like the wall decorations Rapala makes. Roc I was the one looking for Gunny and Mackeral patterns. Keep up the great work guys. I show these posts to everyone even if they don't care.

Stuff looks great zeema, and the off-center turning has me intrigued too, I bought one oc turned plug and played with trying to duplicate it....if you don't mind me asking, how far apart were the 2 centers you used on the end with 2 centers? I was about 1/4" apart with mine, and when I put it back in the centers after turning the first time, it was.....interesting, more like a camshaft than a plug.
Maybe you and roc can share some secrets....

Roc showed me and I was amazed at how it works. It's a multi step process. As you normally would, mark center and then mark 1/8 to 3/16" from either side of center. I don't think I went as far as 1/4, even though I can't see why 1/4 would not work.. The more from center you go, the more pronounced the offset. Turn the plug shape using the center mark. When happy with the shape, move the tail stock live center to the offset mark on one side of center. Reduce the spindle speed and take chips to get to the Cam shape. Roc explained that you need to try to focus on 2 diameters as you are turning. One being created from the center mark and the other from the off center mark. It takes some focusing to see them. Then move the live center to the other side of center. Now take chips until the 2 diameters come into focus. Sand to finish it off. It's tough to explain in text. This is a good excuse to make another one. I'll take some pictures this time and post them.

does it being off center dramatically change the action?

khary,
Both the one I bought and the one I turned swim pretty well, mine is topwater, the one I bought is a sinker.....the guy I bought it from said that he only moved one end across the 2 center points to get his shape, so I'm curious how it actually should be done. You wind up with a plug that is oval shaped, taller than it is wide.

Using one off center hole will get the cam shape. Going either side of center will give the oval shape.
