It was pure luck and not too pretty, but I finally caught one today.
I had chunked herring for nearly two hours without a single bite.
It was fairly rough and I have to give my wife credit for putting up with it.
Took a ride and marked fish that I assumed were Bluefish.
On the return trip, the gulls were pretty active. So I dropped a Rapala deep diver in the water and hooked up pretty quickly.
I thought it was a Blue at first, but as it got near the boat, it didn't fight much.
It was hooked in the side of the head, but not too badly.
Measured it at just 28" so I let it go - seemed to swim off fine.
I did hook into another fish but lost it after a few seconds - don't know what that one was.
By that time the wife was sick of fishing and wouldn't hear of anchoring up and chunking again
Thank you to all of you who have been giving me advise!!
