Default Herring lure

hey folks, wanted to know what a good lure would be to use while herring are around. and also how do you know what bait fish are around with out seeing them out of the water(or hearing from someone). I know that bunker jump but mullet, herring, etc. I haven't the slightest Idea
thanks

During a Herring Run, I love the Tsunami stuff...they put out lures in a black black/silver side pattern that is holographic. With a little bit of Herring Smelly Jelly smeared over it, it can really get the Bass horned up.

Also the, Fin-S stuff in Alewive pattern is a top choice for me.

In the Fall they will hit about anything thrown at them, I like to use metals Kastmasters and Charlie Graves, Pt. Jude, and NJ Tackle. I also like slugo's and storm shads.

at night I use olive and white, blue/ pink/ white, Blue and white
I usually use needles but others should work
always use a teaser pearl in the day and black at night

some of the action is just out of casting range (for some) get yourself a gold hopkins 3 4 or 5 oz, i don;t know why but bass will hit the metal in gold. i think when herring or shad get russtled or feed or whatever they get a gold tint to them. i have gotten them where not too may people could reach the feeding frenzy. i have a 6 oz gold hopkins that is like a friggen rocket. get down to the bridge or belt pkway and look for the birds. you are closer to breezy than me and that is where the action is. i know the herring are around the statue of liberty as i heard of fish being caught there on live herring.

Yesah. Another good thing to use to believe it or not is a Gags Mr. Bunker. They make em in 3 and 4" sizes. They cast an absolute mile, and work when Herring are around.
