They are everywhere you want stripes and wipers to be, (this was Lake Erie last weekend, no stripes in there! Well, I did catch some white bass, they DO have stripes! ;) )

I am torn between what I know will catch Wipers .... (IF I can find them ,with all this water in our lake) ..and what will catch numbers of White Bass at any time , but probably won't attract the larger Wipers.

Translation :
I can troll with Wiper lures and MAYBE get a shot at a large fish . This may not produce even one fish if I can't locate the mature Wipers.
OR
I can troll with White Bass lures and catch many fish.
I am convinced this White Bass method will not attract anything over 16-18 inch fish.

Last Sunday we trolled with our White Bass stuff and caught approx 30 fish with only two being small Wipers. (10"-12")
Largest Whites at 14 1/2 inch.

Water levels are returning to normal and I saw a report with a 18" wiper pictured !!! All is looking up for a hot weather Wiper explosion....except ...my boat motor went south and it will be a couple of weeks before the motor gets replaced..

Then I'll hit the water !!!

I wish you luck with the motor situation. It's aggrevating, I'm sure.

I say fish with large baits for wipers. The larger the better. To maxamize you chances of catching a big one, fish them in the mornings until about 11 a.m. and in the evenings about an hour before sunset until dark. In between, there are always large mouth bass and crappie and the like.

I did get out last Sunday with a buddy in his boat.
The white bass and small Wipers were busting the surface in the shallow bays (8'-10'). Large areas would erupt with whites and 2" shad jumping out of the water. We caught numerous fish with the largest in the 12" range. Wipers were at a 3 to 1 ratio to the White Bass.
It was a blast , although no large ones were caught.

Oh! you gotta love it when that happens. Those white bass don't really fight hard, they turn the flat of their bodies against you and make you work to get them to the boat. It's like snagging a carp just below the dorsal.

Got the 130 hp Yamaha mounted and on the water last Sat . What a sweet motor.
Anyway... got a 17" wiper on Sat, but could not find any Sunday morning. Water temps are some what lower than last year at this time..if that's a good excuse...

Hi Jim...Glad to see you joined ! I'm sure you will get some info on Texas !! See ya on the water !!

Three of us hit the water on Saturday and trolled for the larger ones till dark. We had very little response to our presentations. Couple of small ones.
Sunday we got up on some mud flats in 8 -10 fow and caught wipers till our arms and back hurt. Nothing real big ...up to 15 1/2 inchers. We all had fish on at the same time many times and the water was boiling !!! It was a ball !!
Still looking for the big ones..I know they are in there !!

My buddy tells me of a Wiper he had on last Thursday evening. Brought it to the boat ...but one last run broke him off. Bigger line ..bigger line !!
Was out all day Sunday....Tough day !!!! Hard to find even the little ones.
I hear there have been some Walleyes caught...nothing big.
Now we get these big rains in northern Iowa...the lake is projected to raise 8 feet or more. Don't really know what that's going to do for us.???

One of our Central Iowa Angler members posted this video produced for and by the Izaak Walton league. In the opening scene is the DesMoines river spillway (Saylorville dam) where the past two state record Wipers have been caught. The Video is a tribute to the Iowa men and women who cleaned up tons of litter from the DesMoines river chain .
