Fishing Report

2nd Week of June 2008

Catching striped bass from Popular Island, south to the gas docks, was spotty this week. Only specific locations had any quantity of stripers. Stripers in the 19" to 22" range were caught after putting up a good fight on light spinning tackle. A few flocks of birds working the water 'in close' were sighted.

The most productive lure was a 5" Bass Assassin, soft plastic bait, in chartreuse/glitter, rigged on a 3/4 ounce jighead. A variety of techniques were productive. The one that I call 'on the run' was the most productive this week.

On the Run: Cast the lure out and once it hits the water, strip line off the reel so the lure drops vertically at the same location of where it hits the water. Bounce the lure off the bottom, then back down to the bottom swiftly three times. This is done by moving the rod tip from 9 am to 11 am keeping a tight line at all times. If no fish take the lure, put the rod tip on the water and crank on the reel 5 times, stop and jig.....crank on the reel 5 times, stop and jig all the way back to the boat. You'll be covering all the water columns using this technique.

There are a lot of baitfish on the western shore and the water clarity ranges from 6" to 3'. Things should pick up this week as they normally do after Father's Day.

Thanks for the tip.
