Question Fish finder issue!

Hi All,
The boat I bought has a Humminbird LCR400ID fish finder in it, but in tsting it it does not work. In about 20 feet of water I am ensuring the tranducer is in the down position and all is off in the boat and I get reaing so 350-400 feet...the reedings stay in that range when at no wale speed anywhere from 150-450 feet when we know it is not that deep. Any ideas? I really do not want o get a new one if I can get this fixed. The guy before said he never really used it, but he thought it worked.

also if I HAVE to get a new one what do people think of the Garmin 140 or the Lowrance X86? And does color matter that much in depth determination to justify the price up from the above two? thanks!

Humminbird. Say no more. Seriously though, you may just need a new transducer.
If you do need a new unit Lowrance is a good way to go. And yes, the higher price of a color unit is absolutely worth it.

I had 2 Hummingbirds in the past and now have a Lowrance. Lost the LCD's on both Hummingbirds. I have the x86 and wish I chose this one the first time around.

I purchased the Furuno GP1650WS used with all the cables, GPS unit, and transducer from Ebay for 500 bucks. This is by far the best unit for a reasonable price I’ve seen. The depth finder is very accurate and with dual modes you can see a lot more. We fish the Chesapeake bay mostly but also take trips to ocean city md. In the course of the last year I’ve had many people on my boat, a few of them are charter captains and DNR researchers that I know on a personal basis, they all have been amazed by this unit, especially its ability to work at speed. Around 15 knots it still gives a pretty decent signal which is great for locating schools.

Sounds like a great deal, I just worry about Ebay...I have been screwed more times than I wish to count on there...
