3 year herring population study. Where are the results?
I have read on the DEP website that states are being basically forced to conduct a study of there herring populations. The point of this 3 year study is to prove that the herring in your area are being harvested in a sustainable manner. If the state or governing body cannot show evidence of a sustainable fishery in that 3 year window then they will be forced to shut the fishery down completely to all commercial and recreational fishing, no ifs and or buts about it. The DEP site stated that he Hudson River surveys started in 2012. This would mean that our recent 2014 season would have been the 3rd and final year of the study. Does anybody have any real insight into this project or perhaps any knowledge on our herring population? I only started fishig for striper in 2012, bought a boat in 2013 and now have fished two seasons with my own boat and one year getting out when I could with a generous friend. From what I have seen, herring seemed very abundant this year compared to the last two. I guess this is time for us to cross our fingers. I hope we can continue to fish this epic run each year.
