Default Best 12 Weight Fly Reel for surf fishing for < $350?

Hi All,

Looking for your advice.

I just bought a 9' 12 weight rod as a cannon for heavy duty surf fishing throwing large flies into the wind. Looking for advice on a good reel w/ dependable drag, preferably sealed so it will stand up to the surf & sand mix, and also let me switch spools easily.

Primary use will be in the Northeast, but I also want a good drag for the occasional Tarpon & lighter Tuna fishing.

I just bought an Orvis Battenkill Large Arbor Big Game LA VI on clearance but found it's not the latest version for which they beefed up the drag tension. The drag on this LA VI seems really light so I may send it back. I'm considering buying an Orvis V02 VI (new but 1 or 2 years old) but understand it's not a sealed drag so I don't know how it would stand up to the surf & sand.

My cost on the Orvis VO2 V1 would be approx $220 w/ extra spool at $100. Any recommendations for better reels either new or great condition used that I could get for up to $350 or so?

I would look into the sage 1800 series and up. I bought a 9wt reel in the 1800 series this year and I am very pleased with it. They come with a sealed graphite drag and are well within your price range.

You may have to give up a little backing capacity. But if you are going to be wade fishing the surf on the Outer or over on the Brewster flats you may not find the backing to be an issue.

That Orvis you have is considered to be the Penn 706 of the fly reel world
Tough and dependable

Sudsy. Which Orvis are you referring to? The Battenkill Big Game LA VI? If so it's the earliest model. The latest version Orvis beefed up the drag on the LA VI model only because it was too light. Because I got such a good price I'm thinking about living with it & palming the spool as needed...what do you think?

If you're referring to the Vortex one other problem is that you need a screwdriver to change spools. Not good to clear sand jams in the surf or for a quick spool change on the beach

I just realized you're looking for a 12 weight.

This reel is great for stripers but if you have plans to take it out for blue water species I don't think it's the reel for you.
