Welcome to the forum gotta_fish!
We have very few active users from down in your neck of the woods. Sorry you haven't gotten any responses yet. Hopefully someone will pipe up soon. Merry Christmas!

Having come from L.I. NY to Charlotte NC I feel your pain. I am a “to the bone surf fisherman”. Boat fish don’t count! I have now made an enemy of almost every fisherman in North Carolina with that statement. The rare and best Bait & Tackle store I have found is a luncheonette first. Most Bait & Tackle shops don’t sell combos over $30.00. People here go to Dicks or Wal-Mart. Rod builders don’t exist as far as I can find. And as far as comparing any forums down here to anywhere in the northeast is like comparing the WSJ with USA Today. If you are a night fishermen better start working on your conversational skills with the wife. YOUR ARE NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE.

Now the good stuff (I did not say easy). If you are a boat guy, you have it easy IMHO. Turn your radio on, disconnect your mike and listen. Say hi to anyone who comes close. They are very very friendly down here still. Last Never Never tell anybody how you used to do it elsewhere. You are in Rome now, learn to do it their way first. The more that they see you doing it their way the more will approach and share.

If you are a “BANK” fisherman (no such thing as a surf fisherman on the west side) go to dicks or Wal-Mart and get yourself a 6-7’ combo and go fish a fishing pier at lake Norman or dukes power. Now fish for L/M Bass starting by March and bluegills in summer. I know you said stripers but you have to start somewhere and make friends. ‘Say hi to anyone who comes close. They are very very friendly down here still. Last Never Never tell anybody how you used to do it elsewhere. You are in Rome now, learn to do it their way first. The more that they see you doing it their way the more will approach and share.’ Next thing before you even realize it, people will be taking you to lakes you would never find on Google and get you permission for fish there and it has strippers. You will be able to fish some of these places at night. Keep your mind open to catfish; they are fun like bluefish in my opinion.

Down here it is not what you think you know or how much you have done. It is how much trust you have earned; one cigarette butt can close all doors.

Do I miss playing peek a boo with the state troopers, sinking in marsh mud until the butt bubble in my waders is big enough or I land on a 57 Chevy, or after a night of fishing I now have a two mile hike thru marsh swamps and drainage ditches with mosquitoes who carry metal lunchboxes bigger than mine? Heck yea. But it was not hard to love fishing here. Especially since for me I love the hunt more the catching and there is always something to target all throughout the year.

Good Luck to you, and remember, good thing do come for those who put in there time at the bottom of the ladder and earn their way up it.
