Default Leader length - Merrimack River

New to this forum and striper fishing. Really enjoying the tips and overall banter. I fished the river side at Salisbury last week. Beautiful day, incoming tide. Fished herring chunks from the small jetty by the toothpick ( I think it's called). There must have been 10 rods on land within eye shot and as many in boats. Nobody caught a thing all day until a guy pulled up next to me and caught three in 45 minutes. Just when I thought my skills we're at least on par with everyone else. ha.

My question is: Would anyone have a recommendation on the length of leader to be used in the river. I had read some tips here and there and went with a 30" leader. Most of the guys seem to have been using a smaller leader.

Any info appreciated.

Thanks.

I will make the adjustment.

We we're in the same area with the kids on the beach Saturday and didn't see any hits, shore or in boats.
