Sorry this is a bit late but you want to target river herring spawning areas that are shallow, forget going deep, I've had stripers crashing herring in 12 inches of water right within 6 feet of where I'm standing.

It actually took closer to a month and a half, boy it was a colder transition from winter to spring than last year, but on last Sunday I did miss two strikes, and they were stripers. It should just get better and last about six weeks. I was out dinking around in the boat yesterday with the 6wt right near the top of the incomming at the mouth of the Rondout, wasn't looking exclusively (wrong time of day) for stripers but just out to catch whatever I could ended up missing about eight fish and catching one nice largemouth about 14 inches and three smaller smallies, and a bit of a tan. ;-)

Water temps dropped back again, last time out (Friday) it was back to 50, saw barely any activity, more was happening when it was 53.

Hudson Rive Water Temp. at Athens was 58 degrees yesterday.

My fishing partner hooked up a 38 inchs cow and released her. The Fishing Contest in Catskill is showing a 45 1/4 inch leader.

The good thing about this contest is if you know the parameters of the money fish you can catch a nice cow and if she is to small for the bucks you can cut her loose to spawn and keep the volume of eggs up.

A 38" fish is good for 500,000 eggs.

Borrowed my neighbor's 8 wt, had a hit but missed it. The guy about 20 feet from me then got a 33incher about 15 seconds later. Oh well. It was a ton of fun. I wasn't in the hudson, but this is the only active fly striper thread.

I live in Saratoga Springs and have had minimal success near the dam. Where the nearest best place to get in and cast a fly? The striper I caught at the dam had just hatched.

The key is you need to find spawning herring. I'm not near there (Saratoga)but look in small tidal tributaries to the Hudson below the dam, the smaller the better (as long as it has a good run, some streams don't, you got to do your homework there, it will take some scouting on your part) target those and check them at all tides.
