Schooling bass in back bay?
Hello all! I'm new to striper fishing and rod n reel fishing in general. I live on the back bays in Eastern Long Island. I've caught a couple blues the past few weeks, runners I'd imagine as the action isn't thick yet.
Around dusk there has been a ton of feeding activity but it doesn't seem to be blues? A lot of jumping and surface feeding all over the place in the shallows. The water depth is about 2-10 feet, dark mud bottom.
I have thrown a few minnow traps and run a minnow seine through the area and I got a bunch of killifish, small green crabs, and grass shrimp.
I have spent two evenings and nights jigging right into the jumping school of fish. I can't imagine its bluefish as I've thrown white diamond jigs and various colors right into them. So I'm guessing it is bass?
A friend of mine suggested trying some smaller bright colored lures so I tried a Rapala firetiger lure and they seemed to nibble on it but not much more than a quick nibble.
I was thinking of trying a smaller similar bright colored lure I have. I also was thinking about getting a lure like the Yozuri Killifish to try to mimic what I belive they are fishing on. I also have a Daiwa small minnow lure I was going to try.
Does this sound like bass? Any thoughts? Thank you so much!!! Cheers, Morgan
