North of trap rock out early saw the regular striper 247 crew pass me heading north to the Poughkeepsie bridge using sands tipped with small blood landed 4 large females from 20lbs to over 30 max of my scale ,41 inches this was an exceptional fight . I was drifting from 12 feet to 25 some hit as I was reeling in or moving the boat lost a rod after drifting into 10 feet reeled up some line put the rod on the deck moved a few feet watched the rod bounce off the back think it was fish but could have been bottom I think a one oz would drag on the bottom. Some male teens mixed in ,moving to the saltwater in a few days .Good luck !

Yep.....last night that whole east side from Trap Rock to N of Marist was loaded with thick/solid schools......and big ones too. I am a bit concerned that every hit was southbound though but I think they may be staging to hit Marlboro bay any day now for a massive spawn when the water temp rises.

Me and my buddy went out from 730 am to 300 PM Sunday. We drifted all over newburgh to beacon from 38 fow to 8 fow anchored up. Caught 10 fish, than we managed to find a steady school by the newburgh bridge in 37 fow until 34 fow around 1130 am which was hide tide, starting to go back out. The bite lasted for about 3 hours. Couldn't put the poles down. I lost count but we caught more than 40 fish easy. No size though biggest was 24 inches. They hit bloods and sands drifting 17 to 21 feet down.

Hi Doc,
When you mention the Poughkeepsie bridge, is that the one that carries route 44 over the river?
How far downstream is it from Rogers Point Marina?
I usually start from Certified Marina on the Rondout in Kingston and fish south to Rogers Point if we need to go that far to find fish.
My fishing is strictly trolling stick baits since my boat is set up for deep water lake trolling.
Your frequent reports of the many fish caught on blood worms is sure tempting!!

I don't know where Rogers Point Marina is but I think its around 15 miles from Kingston to Poughkeepsie. Trolling stick baits is OK but please don't use downrigger balls............I watch a fleet of trollers killer dozens of fish by running through the school.

Hit the Rondout again today, thinking the hogs would be in the creek feeding with the low barometric pressure from the front moving in on us. STILL having boat troubles, so I'm fishing off the docks at the Marina. Well the hogs WERE feeding but not the Stripers. I caught my personal best Channel Cat at 8 pounds 8 ounces. Got my limit of herring in 15 minutes but the Stripers didn't show.

Finally, after about 40 hours of fishing. One at 30", one 19". Herring 4 at a time. 26" freshwater drum also, and two two foot cats. Video is kinda long, but I wasn't about to lose my first real hook up of the year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4SJ6LrXW0s

Doc, thanks for the tips on Monday night. We ended up with close to 40 in 4 hours. We will be out all day Thursday.

For everyone docked in Marlboro....I went to the marina this morning and there were barely any leaves on the ground. The storm must have blown right over the top of the river. All the boats looked ok. Just a lot of rain there. My neighborhood 5 miles up the road in Newburgh was CRUSHED!! See you on the river.

We had another great day with 20 fish from 20-35 inches.......mostly on the larger end. It was a bit tougher to find some fish today but when we did they were hungry. Most were caught just south of the Poughkeepsie bridge mid day but our 35" one was caught late tonight after dark just south of Whites Marina. There were lots of fish on the channel floor and a whole lot of spawning......right off the back of our boat from Milton to Poughkeepsie.....huge females. Water temp was 59.5. The high 20" fish are hitting like freight trains now but the 33+ in fish are still mouthing the bait and swimming away slow. Crashing on the boat to head back out at 3am.
