I have livelined from Jetty's and surf before. If you are using Snappers what I would recommend is launch him out there with a sinker to keep him near the bottom and struggling.

Snappers die fast though, but not as fast as bunker sometimes. Also reeling it in slowly would be a decent idea if there are no snags around. Just make sure you feel the tail sending out lots of vibrations otherwise you'll be playing the "MAYBE?" game. I usually use a treble hook through the tail. The fin tears too easily for me. The lips ain't bad either.

I usually have nice fluke pick up snappers. It seems like Weakies are a bit shy of them when they are around.

A sand spike would help a lottt and keep the tension on the line tight.

Default live bait

YES! I live lined whenever possible in the surf. If you can find a school of bunker and snag one, set the hook into it and leave it out there.

I fished Sandy Hook regularly and the number one mistake I saw with the surf fishing was the "Let's put out ten rods and sit in a chair" attitude. I outfished my friends most of the time by holding my one rod. I also kept my bait in the wash or just past it. Most of my nighttime bass were right in the wash.

The guys fishing the docks in Wehawken and Jersey City were heuge fans of the live bunker. They would sit on benches all day waiting for schools of fish to come by. Otherwise, some of the guys would never wet a line.
