Default need advice on a surf rod

I just need some advice for a new plugging rod for the surf. I have a st. croix premier surf rod 10'6'' rated heavy and its just what it is, heavy. I'm lookin for something near the same size but a little easier for casting different plugs. I also have a rogue that I love but its 8' med heavy and doesn't get the distance I want. I'm really interested in the loomis rods, I have a spinning and casting 7' med and med heavy glx that I simply love for freshwater and want to go for the loomis but any tackle shops around me don't have any and I really want to put one in my hand before I spend money. does anyone have any suggestions on the loomis surf rods for plugging?

thanx for the response Sudsy but I guess I already know what I want, I just gotta feel a rod first. I ordered the st. croix without putting it in my hands first and really its a little heavy and better for dead stickin. I can use plugs with it but man my arm feels it fast. I wanna check out the loomis surf rods, can't go wrong with the name or warranty and I'm already happy with my other loomis rods. any other input would be appreciated.

a penn power stik is a very light but powerful rod perfect for plugging. they have a 11 footer rated for 15-30 and 12 ft for 20-40. I use it for all my surf fishing

I like my 1266S Loomis A LOT. Light, Casts what I like 1-3+ oz plugs just fine.I had the butt re-wrapped. That non-skid stuff they put on it will wear a hole in your waders FAST!!!. Had mine re-done in shrink rubber x-Flock with no cork under. Very nice.

The Ron Arra Lamiglass rods look super light weight. I saw one from across the store, and I thought it was a trout fly fishing rod at first. They are limited to like 4 oz plugs, and are sort of expensive.

Pick up one of these neoprene rod holders for your wade belt...or for a belt used lower on your waste. The loop at the bottom lets you put the handle through for easier holding while tying and the pocket is where you put the butt while plugging. Takes all that weight off your arms....and it doesnt wear through your waders.

I use a Lami SurfKing, that throws 2oz plugs real nice.
I use a 10'6" rod from a local builder, B Brothers, in Westerly RI, and that is one of the finest plugging rods I own. It's so good I bought another.

I really like my 11' tsunami airwave for 1-3 oz plugs. Sweet rod and super light.

loomis rods are nothing but a waist of money. One of the reasons guys don't cast far enough with an 8' or 10' rod is #1 they don't know how to load the rod properly, # 2 the guides on the rod are to small, and the line diameter is to thick, #3 the real seat on the blank is not set high enough in order to get proper leverage when loading the rod to cast.

If you have the $ to waist on a loomis I would go to a rod builder and have one built to your body frame and stille of fishing.

PS- the further up the blank you have the real seat the better you will load the rod therefore casting farther, always use the biggest guides possible, and the smallest diameter line available.

1BadBass: try a 10'6" Tica Dolphin as well. The claimed rating is 2-8 but it's really more a 1.5-5 and has a nice whippy tip...
Won't cast under 1.5 too well and really wants 2oz though...
