Question Penn mag 980?

A friend of mine gave me a penn 980 mag are they for the surf or for boat fishing? Are they anygood?

They are not very good reels,,send it to me and ill pay you 75 dollars to dispose of properly

They're only good if you like casting a good, long distance with no backlash, or like a dual purpose surf/boat casting reel with sufficient cojones to handle strong fish. Other than that, I agree with Bent/Bolt, you should send it to one of us for disposal..........

thanks for all the replys I guess I will keep it might even try it this spring maybe it will be a lucky reel I know it has not been used for the last 10 yrs or so

for the guys that have the 980 what type of line do you recommend braid or mono and what lb test I fish the surf in S Jersey?

I have 25lb Big Game on each of mine. The 980s I own see use on the beach fishing bunker chunks, on the boat for bunker as well as drifting live bait. I have never had braid on one of them so I can't speak as to how the reel would handle it, though I don't believe it would be any problem

Mine is loaded with 18lb Ande Tournament. When adjusted correctly, it will nearly empty the spool with a cast. The drag is nice and right up there with all of the best Penn used to make. I also have been known to use a squidder from time to time, but the 980 is a hell of a lot more forgiving. My opinion is that it belongs on a long rod in the surf casting big plugs.
