Default A True Fishing Tale

A True Fishing Tale
By Ed Wall
Special to the Sun Journal
When the ?Saltwater Sportsman? Seminar, being held in New Bern?s Riverfront Convention Center, broke for lunch on Saturday, a group of participants walked across the street to Union Point Park. There, they came upon a young boy, about ten, casting from one of the docks. One of the men asked the boy if he was having any luck. The polite response was, ?No sir.?
The man went on to explain to the lad that he would probably be better off fishing farther down the walkway, near the shore where there was ?a lot of structure and probably a temperature break.?
The boy, apparently not understanding the man?s wise words, just kept on casting. A moment later, his little spin casting rod made a deep bend. After a brief struggle, he swung a twelve-inch striped bass onto the dock. He held it up to show the men, dropped it back into the river and began casting again.
A few casts later, his rod bent again but this time it stayed bent. The boy tugged and cranked and eventually, with the help of another fisherman and his net, landed a largemouth bass that onlookers estimated would weigh at least four pounds.
The young angler was so excited that all he could do was jump up and down and holler, ?It?s the biggest fish I ever caught.? After that, he began to hyperventilate and couldn?t say anything else. Bystanders said that the men from the seminar couldn?t say anything either. Apparently perseverance is more important than knowledge in some cases.
