Default Catching bait?

I was watching a guy last week wsing a square drop net and a rubber Herring catch bait. I went out and got a net and some rubber Herring, any tips on catching them?

Get a 3oz jig and a sibiki rig and cast/drop into the fish. i like rigs with a 30lb main line..easy peasy, no net needed.

Sounds like you were fishing the Hudson, as the use of a scap net and stoolie is popular there. Don't expect it to work as well from shore in the MA salt, which is primarily what the previous 2 posters are talking about.

You'll be more productive in MA waters using a sabiki for herring & macs, or a snag hook when there are bunker around.

We went yesterday, the Stripers were jumping everywhere but would not bite. Would you throw topwater lures in the Hudson? I am going to try it Sunday when we go back. I have a box full of lures and plugs.

How would we be catching Herring in Ma. if we are fishing the Hudson?
