Default Opinion wanted on what to do.

Last time I went out before Thanksgiving, We got stuck on Narragansett bay and had to be towed in. My boat was going in for winterization shortly after so I had them look at it then. <1988 ChrisCraft Cavalier 20 ft Bowrider, 4.3 Mercruiser with Alpha outdrive>

I got the results today. I spun the coupler that attaches to the flywheel and did damage to the linkage it attaches to. Also when they tryed to flush the boat they foud ouot the exhaust hoses are STUFFED with rust and of course that rust had to come from somewhere.

I was told the coupler can get spun two ways, lack of lubrication from improper maintenance or the engine is no longer in line due to Rotted stringers/transom. and if this is the case all bets are off.

At this point they are talking about 2400.00 to 3000.00 in Repair costs based on what they found. (this is a reputable well recommended shop).

I JUST BOUGHT THE BOAT in May. for 3000.00 including trailer. the upholstery in some places is a bit ripped but otherwise the hull is good.

What would any of you do?

Fiirst.. deep breath... spun couplers are common, the MOST common cause is from not lubricating the splines on the drive shaft BEFORE installing the outdrive... mis alignment can cuase it, but I'd put money on the dry shaft....

What you need to know is this, is the rubber spun or is the aluminum spun.... Aluminum= lubrication, rubber= alignment.

The grease on the shaft takes up the excess play between the shaft and the internal drive splines on the coupler, with out the grease, the splines work back and forth until they shear the aluminum... ooff center/alignment kind of explains it'self.

Heat risers full of rust are also common.... not that big of a deal, the rust flakes off from inside the riser and clogs the small holes,if the boat was not exibiting signs of over heating, remove the risers, clea out the rust in the small portsand reinstall...

thanks!

the deep breath has been tough. I have not looked at it myself yet, but they did tell me it was the aluminum portion that was spun. So maybe I can get out of this by doing a lot of work myself. I really hope so...I had way to much fun fishing from a boat!

more than likely, the motor will have to come out to gain acess to the coupler.... if whom ever had installed the outfdrive on the boat last had greased the shaft... this wouldnt have happened..

Since I just had it winterized I will probably wait til March to yank the motor. I think a standard crane lift (like for a car engine) should be able to do it If I can get the trailer low enough..
Thanks Roc!
