If you only have room for or can afford one of the two, go with the band saw, it is much more versatile and with a 1/4" blade can do anything a schroll saw can do...
On the other side of the coin, a schroll saw can make fine tight cuts but is unable to resaw or rip lumber...

I have both and use both, I find the schroll saw best for making hand carves and templates...by having both, and using both, there is no need to break down a set up... saves time.

I had both but in order to save much needed space I got rid of the scroll saw. To be honest I don't miss it at all. There's no way I'd be able to say that about the band saw.

The band saw is probably more versatile.

I make smaller freshwater stuff. I did discover that when using Lexan for lips (a couple of feeble crankbait attempts), if you use two of the thick blades (size 11) in the scroll saw holder together, that the lip slot was darn near perfect. Just add up the thickness of the blades to get the thickness of your Lexan. You may be able to put three in the holder if the blades are secured together with tape or something.

Rclark- I have the DeWalt 788 and it goes 1-10(10 highest). I just kept it somewhere around the 5-6 range and used size 5 reverse tooth blade. You could probably use a smaller blade with no problem. As I recall, I did a "stack cut" method of 4 lips, but wouldn't advise it because getting the lips identical was a lot tougher without the pattern on all the lips. Just cut outside the lines of your lip pattern and sand it to the line.
