Upland? That's what I enjoy most. I used to do a lot of quail down the the Cape. Now if I can get out it is to Maine for Grouse. I wouldn't trade my Ithaca Model 37 12 gauge for many things. Light and efficient.

And while I wouldn't call it a tool, the most productive thing for me was my partner. Benny. A wonderful pointing, flushing, retrieving, welcoming me home from work friend.

Here is working a Yew but in Somerville. Damn I miss him.

Joe, Miss him? What happened?
My best upland tool was my English Springer Spaniel, Brandy. We hunted 9 solid seasons togther. We laid her to rest in 1999. I DO miss her like a daughter.
2 nd favorite tool is my 20 gauge H&R modified choke single shot. I call it my instinct gun.

Brandy

For grouse in Maine: A handed down 16 gauge Stevens side-by-side...perfectly balanced and fits me to the T. Thing has some history to it and is a pleasure to be in the woods with.

For deer in Maine: Either the Savage Model 99e in .308 with a scope, Remington Model 742 Woodsmaster in .308, with iron sights or a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 in .30-06 with iron sights.

Joesixpack, Nice Brit. I have three Brit's and they are the absolute best dogs. The third one is a 7 month old son of my oldest Zoe. When it's time to go to work hunting they meet me at the door in the morning. When it's time to kick back they become the best pets in the world for the wife and kids.

As for my toys in the field, My Browning over/under 12 ga. superposed is the go to gun, but I always have a back up with me, one is the old reliable Winchester 870 12 ga pump I got on my 16th B-day or a 12ga Breda-Brescia (Italian)Semi. The only problem using the 870 at this point in the game is I forget to pump it when I go out because I rarely use it these days. Nothing worse than pulling the trigger the second time and......nothin, sh*t!!!!!

Good luck to all in the field.

Speaking of pulling the trigger and nothing a couple years ago i was hunting behind my house with my "trusty" woodsmaster auto 30-06. A deer jumped out in front of me and was pretty much just like shoot me i think the deer knew my gun wouldnt go off because it just stood there and looked at me i squeezed the trigger and click off goes the deer. Not sure why it did this but it has done the same thing when i go target shoot with it.

it sounds like you have a weak firing pin ..or something could have messed up when you may have cleaned it

Im not sure what it is. I was kinda going to blame it on my piece of shit clip i have for it..Its not made for a 30-06 it says 270 on it but its what has always been used in the gun..I got it passed down from my father and i have shot more deer with this gun than anyother..So how would i know what to look for?

my 30-06 semi auto has a differant clip my gun is the 7400 semi auto my clip says 30-06 also says the following 270 caliber 35 whelen 280 rem so the clip interchanges guess ..also some times these guns have problems when they get real cold if the gun dont go off it might not be going forward.take your clip out and grease the inside by the firing pin see if this helps basically grease the reciver on the top
