Boating safety campaign kicks off
RENSSELAER, N.Y. -- Just as the boating season is getting started, the U.S. Coast Guard launches its 2010 Recreational Boating Safety campaign.
They're teaming up with state and local agencies to conduct additional safety boardings on the Hudson.
It's all in an effort to make sure boaters have the equipment needed.
Coast Guard Chief of Enforcement Lt. Commander Mike Basher said, "We conduct boardings as a preventive measure to ensure that boaters hitting the Hudson are operating the safest capacity as possible. Frankly we don't want them ending up a statistic in the lost of lives category or injury category."
Officials also say that wearing life jackets while on the water is one of the most effective and simple life-saving strategies for safe, recreational boating.
