Default New To Stripers

Moved to NC last year and am looking to learn how to fish for stripers. I live close to the Catawba river near Charlotte. I have a small aluminum V to get me around on the river, but I don't know the first thing about stripers, other than they look big and my boys and I want to catch some. Where do I start as far as tackle, from line weight to lures? Thanks in advance for helping a rookie.

Hi Burnt. Welcome to the site.
The best place to get you started would probably the Stripers 101 thread. It could take quite some time to answer the question you posed. Tackle, line weight, lures and approaches are all discussed in this thread.
Take a little time to browse through it. Everything you need is in here somewhere. The search can be a great help as well.

Basics are at least 17 pound test if your using monofilament. A decent reel that can hold 2 to 300 yards of line.
The rest depends on tactics and presentation.
Hope you enjoy the site and put a few stripeys in the boat with the boys this season.

Thanks for the help. I've done web searches, but everything I find seems to be geared towards saltwater. Sure am glad I found this place. I see pictures of these fish but wonder what I can expect in the river......and when.

Welcome, Burntmypiston. If you are accustomed to freshwater fishing, start by using only baitcasters--you'll burn through spinning rigs. Use 12 pound test line, minimum. Get a collection of jigbaits that look alot like Stump Jumpers-- Google that and you'll see what I mean. Let out about 150 yards of line behind that aluminum boat, set the motor at idle speed, and troll. You will probably come across something that will scare the living daylights out of you. In your region Lake Norman is famous for stripers. Start fishing in early March and keep it up until at least the middle of December. You'll find them.
Good luck!

One other thing, be there at sunrise or sunset, your choice. That is fine time. Don't give up because the sun goes down. Those stripers don't care that it's dark out.
