Default What kind of mammal?

About 2 am the other night I had a visitor while I was slinging eels from shore. I was down in Groton CT and had never seen one of these before. It was definitely something from the weasel family. I have narrowed it down to either a American Marten, a Long-tailed Weasel, or a Ermine. This thing had no white on it though, black and dark brown fur. Came right up to me as I shined my light on it, staring at me. Hung out on the rocks with me for a little while then took off. It's tail wasn't too too long (i'd say a little shorter than a squirrel) and was black. The whole animal was a little smaller than a squirrel but I have no idea if it was a juvenile or something. Anyone have any ideas what might be scurrying around the CT coastlines?

In all my years in the woods I saw a member of the weasel family once. Amazingly stealthy animals.
If you saw it and it showed no fear I would bet my best reel that it was an escaped pet.

...just saw this pic of a mink - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mink - kinda looked like that

It's not that it didn't show fear, I didn't touch it but it came close as I sat (pretty still) going in and out of the holes between the rocks by my feet, definately not a pet imo.....plus I've seen domestic ferrets and this looked nothing like it (other than similiar body style)...really looked like the mink from that pic...

maybe a juvenile fisher sometimes called a 'fisher cat'. Could have been a young one as they often are unknowing of people. Look out if the adult is around. They do not care about you at all, and are very nasty.
