Default 2009 - 2010 Baseball Hot Stove

http://www.prosportsdaily.com/mlb/mlb-rumors.html

183 players are eligible to file during the 15-day period for players that ends next week. The list already includes World Series heroes Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui, along with such familiar names as Orlando Cabrera, Mark DeRosa, Chone Figgins, Vladimir Guerrero, Matt Holliday, John Smoltz and Orlando Hudson.

Among the notable players that have yet to file are pitchers Andy Pettitte and Randy Johnson, and catcher Ramon Hernandez. Pettitte and Johnson have not announced if they will return for the 2010 season, but there is sure to be interest if they decide to come back. Bay in contact with other clubs, but still prefers Boston

"It's the calm before the storm for Jason Bay and the Red Sox.

The 31-year-old outfielder will be one of the most sought-after free agents this offseason. It's also a strong possibility he will return to Boston once he tests the market for the first time in his career.
For now, the Sox still have exclusive rights to negotiate with Bay until Nov. 20.
But Bay's agent, Joe Urbon, says that he has been in contact with other clubs about Bay, although they're not allowed to talk contracts until the 20th.
It's unlikely the Red Sox and Bay will finalize a deal before then, given the fact this is his first opportunity to test the free-agent market, and he's said in the past he's interested in learning about the entire process."

Jason Bay rejected a contract offer from the Red Sox worth about $60MM over four years, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com. We've heard for a while that Bay wants to test the free agent market, so as Red Sox GM Theo Epstein says, it's "not a surprise."

The Cubs are nearing an agreement with lefty John Grabow on a two-year deal. The deal will be worth nearly $7.5MM over two years. Grabow struck out 7.1 per nine innings and walked 5.0 per nine with the Pirates and Cubs last year for a 3.36 ERA

It makes no sense to me why the winter meetings precede the date for tendering contracts to players.

Dec. 7-10, 2009
Winter Meetings

Dec. 12, 2009
Last day for teams to tender 2010 contracts to unsigned players

A potential 86 more players may be added to the free agent list. Teams look for a bargain here and tend to not pull the trigger at the winter meetings. Watch the activity heat up after tonights midnight deadline.

Escobar will battle Bobby Parnell and newly acquired Japanese reliever Ryota Igarashi for a job setting up closer Francisco Rodriguez in the bullpen. According to ESPN.com, Escobar will make $1.25 million in base salary next season, in addition to a $125,000 bonus if he makes the Opening Day roster.
