Default Outer Banks Surf Fishing

I am vacationing in the Outer Banks NC, north end, near Corolla in two weeks and would like to do some Surf Fishing. I'm borrowing a rod & reel. I need to know what pound test. Braided or mono. What size leader? What type of artificial tackle should I take? Is it better to use live bait? When to fish? And what can I expect to catch? Basically I need major help. This is a first time surf fishing for me and my kids. HELP

I wouldn't go any bigger than 20# test, as far as what's biting and the best baits??? Your best bet is to hit the TW's in Corolla or Bob's (in Duck I think) and get thier take on it when you're down there. The bait shops are usually pretty forthcoming with information on what's biting, where, when and on what.

Did you get rained out on the Vac.?

I was down 6/17-6/25 and had beautiful weather but on the return trip it got rainy. We stopped in VA Beach for 6/24-6/25 and missed the rain altogether, but it was getting windy and rainy when we left the OBX. I was in Waves just below Rodanthe.

As far as the surf fishing, the locals I spoke w/ don't even fish much this time of year except from boat. Cobia were around w/ some nice ones in the surf, but all I had were short flounder, small blues, and if you wanted croakers and spots you could have your fill(boring IMO). Only saw one puppy drum caught around the inlet(18") and I got one small spade. All in all,it's still better to be fishing and not catching then not fishing at all . I'm planning a late Nov. trip as we speak and the stripers and big drum should be starting up by then.

Let me know how you did. Corrrolla is nice area.

Matt
