Default Tragedy Hits Seal Hunt

A disabled fishing trawler under tow from a Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker slammed into a piece of ice and capsized in the dark early hours of Saturday morning, sending six seal hunters into a mad scramble for survival that ended with three dead and one missing.
Two hunters were rescued from the water while three bodies were recovered from the overturned L'Acadien II, a 12-metre boat based in Iles-de-la-Madeleine, Que. Sources say that there was three sealers (sleeping) below deck when the vessel overturned but were unable to be rescued. A very sad day in Atlantic Canada, let us all take to the water with the utmost care and respect with the beginning of fishing season nearing. Remember in near freezing water you have little or no time to save yourself.

God rest their souls. Thoughts and prayers to the families of the lost ones.
Sad indeed.

Sorry to hear. Fishermen and firefighter's deaths on the job always strike me as terrible.

Seal "hunting", is just a harvest, which I think is retarded.

Maybe if they can get the Cod stocks up and approach commercial fishing differently they won't feel a need to go after the seal to augment their incomes.

Retarted don't get me started. Guess were the worms come from in cod? Do you have any idea how may seals frequent our fresh water rivers because they have eaten everything in the sea. When you see 6,000,000 seals on the ice off Newfoundland do you think they are feeding on insects? The seals were stealing stripers off fisherman's lines in Maine last year.

Not good whenever a sportsman is lost.... an adult seal eats it's weight in fish each week...... When I was a kid, the seals showed up on PI in November and left In early April... now they show up in mass by the end of August ( some never leave) and dont leave (if they do leave at all) late June... some stay all summer....

Every rock in those pictures has at least one seal on it... most have two or more... thats just a small sample of what is there....

Captain and first officer of the boat Farley Mowat of the Sea Shepherd society have been charged for harassing seal hunters on the ice flows and almost caused a riot when they docked in St.Pierre and Miquelon. The locals cut the boat loose and told them to leave.

Paul Watson (aka World's Biggest [email protected]#$%^& As#$%^&) the captian of the Farley Moety (aka World's Second Biggest F#$%^&* As%^&**) was quoted as saying "It was a tragedy about the seal hunters but the slaughter of the seals is an even greater tragety". Mmm...Looks like this guy is going to be fish food if he docks at the right port.

I think your comment is retarded. You keep mentioning "they", "they." Who are they? Some people aren't out there for SPORT. Fishermen adhering to regulations trying to earn some money, and putting fish on the supermarket shelves don't all influence legislation, and deserve RESPECT without a seal humpin' post script.

I believe the future of commercial fishing depends on a cooperation between sport and commercial fishermen. There is no fix it button, but time, effort, and legislation can make things better...or worse. It's our choice.
