Default Basic bottom and live line rigs

Below is an assortment of bottom rigs.

left to right: 3 way rig, great for live lining a bait over deep water, leader length approx 2' sinker 12-18" below

Stardard fishfinder rig w/pyramid sinker, bead is used as a stop above swivel to protect the knot, used to present chunk bait, clam or worm.can be used from surf or boat.

High/ low rig, best used from a boat or pier,a good way to present 2 baits at once, top hook is tied to a lrege dropper approx 12-18" above, bottom hook is tied to a 3 way swivel with a sinker break away, good for rocky areas.

Simple leader and swivel, used for live lining eels, worms or crabs.

fishfinder rig w/egg sinker and bait float...

Ballon rig (coke can substitute)w/sliding front hook..

pogy snatcher rigged in tandom

What do you think would be the best rig for live lining a white perch while drifting? I've been jigging alot lately and I've been thinking about live lining (and putting the rod in a holder) while im jiggging....thanks

I dont know how good a white perch would be,or even if it is legal, all them spines! but i do know they eat sunnies and pumkin seeds...

anywayballon rig is the way to go in shallow water or if the fish are near the surface,if they are down deep the 3-way is the way to get your bait to the fish..

alot of people liveline with white perch in the chessy, its one of the stripers main foods.but I've never tried it while drifting before, the three way would probally be better for me since it would keep the rig away from my jig.... your right about the spines though. they flare them up when the striper trys to eat them. its common to see dead rock floating with white perch lodged in their throat

Bass are just like people,we eat things that dont agree with us all the time LOL!

the ballon works nicely because you can get the bait away from the boat, it is one of the few methods that allows you to liveline from shore...

When livelining a sunny or white perch or pretty much any panfish and stuff like that, an octopus hook of the correct size to match the fish, and a steel leader, hook it through the bottom lip, it gives some of the best longevity to the fish.

Only add a small wight if neccesary.

offtopic Livelining:
It also would help to snip off the dorsal fin with a pair if sizzors or cut a notch out from behind the head to make it look like a wounded bite off.

Rock, do you use 2 hooks while fishing for stripers? If you do, do you tie them your self? The "coke can" does that replace a "bobber"?
