Default Fish finder rigs.

Any inpute on using fish finder rigs? An old salt (70 years) from Jersey that fishes freshwater where I go sets his rigs up with a sliding sinker rig, and a float to keep the bait off the bottom. He says thats how he's always done it and that a fifty plus pounder he managed to beach even after his 12 foot surf pole "exploded" down to the bottom eye was rigged that way. I can't discount it because using his settup in freshwater got me a twenty pound pike, but what is the best settup for a bottom bait rig with clam or porgy chunks? any help would be appreciated.

Been using a fish finder rig any time I bait fish.
They make tougher nylon sinker slides for braid now as well.
Never use one with an eel.
Do a search on sinker slides or fishfinders . Theres a ton of discussion on the subject.

The nice part of the "finder" is the vast amount of ways it can be used.
Definately use your imagination. In current, try rigging with a floating Repala.
Repalas don't cast for crap unweighted, but with a finder,,,, and current it's a whole new game.
Cast it out, free-spool til the weight hits bottom and lure floats.
From there you can work it vertically in the colum. Let it drift back (under control) while facing into the current (like in a natural way). Great for rivers, ends of jettys, etc. Beats the "egg" all to hell IMO at times.
Tons of ways to use them. Combine them with smaller Red Gills, flies, etc. with floats, spinners, and what-nots.
Can even fish a combination bait / lure.
They're not just for baitfishing anymore.
