"What type of lure is this" Looks like a surface popper
"what can it mainly catch" Poppers can catch many spices feeding aggressively at the surface

Its a pencil popper. Great at sun up/down when bunker or mullet are around. they also work well when stripers are feeding on really small bait. To use it properly
1. Cast out
2. Take up slack
3. Shake the rod up and down while slowly reeling
What you want to do is have the plug dancing on the surface throwing water. There is definitely a rhythm to it.

Watch this and pay attention to the rod action

The short answer yes. The correct answer you will only gain from experience. 5.2:1 is a fast enough reel. (high number speed - lower number power) 1 to 3 ounces is good for that plug. The rod should load it and cast it. 7 feet on the other hand is short for the surf caster / bankfisherman unless your fishing in close.
Anything from sports authority is likely made in China and pretty much junk, but having said that it will do you ok and catch some fish . One day you will hook into a monster that burns the gears on the reel locks up the drag, smokes and or breaks the rod in half. hope this helps.

Take the line off and have the tackle shop respool it with 20 pound test.

Why waste good line? The first fish worthy of 20 lb test is going to fry his reel and break his rod. Let me rephrase that.... The first keeper size fish will fry his reel and break his rod.

who cares if it burns out the reel and snaps the rod?
as long as the line and knots hold and he manages to land the bastage....

Does any one care to share a nice medium dive, plug brand with me?I just bought a tsumnami walking popper a week ago and havnvt been getting hits. I've casted the right tides from a boat, and just dont really like it? The paint is already fading a little bit from two hours of use. Do you think a 6" floater is to big for the inner harbor early in the year.

Tattoo makes a good diving metal lip. Rapala X-Raps dive 2-8 ft. Also check out 401 plugworks Chris makes a really nice cowboy!
