Default stewiacke river

As,I'm hearing they are closing the river down cause it's the only major spawning spot left around nova scotia theres a debate going on in 08/29/4 to decide if people are allowed to fish there or not. Let me know on what u think about this problem . . . Going to alot of angry protesters and they are planed for all this. Do u think it should be closed so the fish can spawn... And there will be more to fish? Good to all u fishermen out there.

Or use circle hooks - catch and release only during the spawn like they do in the Chesapeake. Why take chances of losing that spawning population forever.

These people wont use barbless hooks.
If this is for the sake of the bass close . just think do u want fish to catch 3 years later if we keep catching them in there spawning season whats left when there done spawning? let them spawn so they can bring the population back! this is a major spawning spot. Well bass river once was filled with bass that spawn. Every year they over fished them. Nothing left in the off season now that river is dead only flounder the odd bass floating around. I love fishing bass I'll never forget fishing them.

The past 2 years I didnt see one warden, I think they should take a little more time and keep their eyes on that river. And each year I see guys comin down on their 4wheelers and hook 3-4 undersize bass than take off.
I thought that they could eithr make the size limit higher on them, all females must be put back, or no keeping any sized bass.
The need wardens around and that would help somewhat...well maybe
Theres my 2cents
should be an eventful meeting tonight also

From what I was told is that a statement in about 2-3weeks will be out. It sounded like it might stay open, but no keeping any fish and no natural bait. This isnt offical though

Ok, My friend went down to the meeting what they said was that u are "Only aloud to fish lures cause what they said was when u use bait the fish take the bait down deeper then the lure.... So the new rule is no bait fishing just lure.

Found this on Nova Scotia Fishing...

There were no decisions made. DFO is going to consider everything and make a decision in 1-2weeks. My prediction there will definitely be changes and probably what most people wanted. It will be published in the chronicle herald before it becomes law. I think enforcement may post notices around fishing spots but it depends on making signs.

Anyone have directions to a decent spot on the Stewiacke to fish for the stripers? I'm thinking of a day trip tomorrow and would like to check it out. What lures do most of you use when river fishing?

Thanks,

J

Anywhere from behind Farmer Clem's ,,up the river. I usually use bait, but they use Rapalas, rubber worms.

Do you need a license in that part of the river? What is the tide compared to Five Islands? Might slip down for a bit I have a meeting in Halifax next week.

Hi Dobb,

Thanks for the tip. I'm coming from Halifax on the 102 and don't even know which exit is for the Stewiacke. D-oh. I looked on Google Earth and it doesn't look that far past Elmsdale. Any directions in that regard would be great too.

Thanks,

J

From Hwy 2 heading toward Hwy 102 and beyond is considered tidal waters so no license is required.

Eh JHD,,if coming from Halifax, as soon as you go by Kentucky Fried Chicken, Dairy Queen, and the Mastadon Ridge, that is the Stewiake river. I fish right on either side of the overpass, usually the lower side. If you take aforesaid exit, you can turn right off the ramp,,1/2km,then left for another500yds and you cross the river. Lots of people fis along here as well. About a km up the road the river winds along close to the road,,you can fish here also. If you fish on the KFC side of the river you should have a long handle net cause the bank is fairly steep and VERY slippery.
Dave,,The tide rises about 8-10 ft by the overpass,,I usually fish on the low tide. Once the tide starts rolling up the river it is full of logs, sticks and debris. And very muddy, Stays muddy untill after it is out again, although you can catch them anytime during the tide ,Iperfer between tides.
I was going to head down today but my plans got changed. Coming home last nite a wheel bearing or front hub assembly went on the car, so I'm waiting for the tow truck to pick it up and deliver it so I can get it apart to see what I need for parts. Most of the autoparts store close at dinnertime.

Good luck Fellows!!!
