Default Reel sticking

I just packed a penn 650ss with peen reel greese, and now its sticking when I reel slowly. Its this becouse of the type of greese? And if so what should I pack it with? Or does it just take some time for the greese to heat up and smooth out?

thanks

Maybe.

What kind of grease?

Is it sticking in the same place every time, or is it more of a generally sticky, hard to reel feeling ?

Roc, he's waterproofing his reel for Montauk in which case he can't put in too much.
I pack my 650ss to the point that when the side plate is screwed on the excess grease is oozing out around the edges.
If it's not totally full you're leaving space for water to get in and thus the reel is not completely waterproof.

Using a heavy sticky grease like axle grease could possibly be part of the problem. More likely there's a part that wasn't reinstalled correctly and is causing the binding.

Sudsy,

I used the blue penn greese. Its sticking when the spool reaches the very top, and very bottom, but its only noticable when I reel slowly(metal lip speed) I was pretty careful putting it back together, but I'll try taking it apart again, and see if that fixes it.

Hmmmm, if it was only sticking when the spool is on the bottom I'd say you forgot to replace the white plastic washer that sits directly under the spool. It's easy to lose as it can stick to the bottom of the spool - when you remove the spool you can be removing the washer which can then drop off unnoticed.

A warped shaft could also be a possibility. It's unlikely but possible. Roll it on a flat surface and make sure it's straight.

The blue grease is pretty sticky. I've used it sparingly on reels that don't get dunked but I've never packed a reel with it so I couldn't tell you if that was the cause. I kinda doubt it though.

For future reference - Corrosion Block Grease, available in some West Marine stores, is the best reel packing material I've ever used. A little pricey but absolutely worth every penny.

I figured it out. I guess when I put it back together the other day I tightened the screw that goes in opposite the handle too tight. Once I loosened it a bit it stoped sticking. Thanks for the help
