Hello all: Glad to be here. I live in central NJ. Would be fishing out of Raritan Bay area. I am setting up a boat To go striper fishing and need some help as to what equipment/tackle i should be buying. I have nothing now, always fished off party boats. Want to buy some rods and reels. Want some good equipment but dont have much $$ after boat purchase. Could use a list what to have on boat. Cant wait to fish off my own boat. Thanks FBB

welcome belly! what size and make of boat? lots of choices but some better than others based on your vessel. fly gear could come into play if it's doable as it has gotten big down your way.

Where are you at in Jersey?
I'm a Raritan bay guy too but from shore and kayak only.

A good way to get started is with the Sea Striker Contour series rods. Here's a review I did on one two years ago.

Sea Striker Contour KST1530C66

By the Sea Striker Company (who, by the look of their website, seems to also own Gotcha Lure, Star Rods, Clarkspoon Lures, Rex-Air Aeration Systems and Penn Reels)

IM6 Graphite
Graphite trigger grip with a stainless front hood
Aluminum oxide guides (By the look of them, probably AmTaks).
6"6" total length
15# to 30# line
5/8 oz to 3 oz lure.
Cork grips

I bought it a few weeks ago as a spur of the moment purchase for $60 at a local tackle shop in NJ (Fishermans Supply in Pt Pleasant Beach) figuring it would be a good dual purpose fluke and striped bass rod.

Took it out today with Gary2 on his boat to use as a second rod, figuring I'd just try it out. Paired it up with a black Abu 7000c Big Game reel spooled with 65# Stealth. Ended up using it for the whole trip. We chunked bass for about 7 hours with most of the fish going around the mid 20# mark. The rod handled them beautifully, the 6 guides + tip are spaced perfectly, never allowing the braid to touch the blank - even on my biggest fish for the day at 28#.

As for the lure rating shown I think it might be closer to 2 to 5 than the 5/8 to 3 listed. I threw 5 oz and a head most of the day and the rod was more than fine with it. The 5/8 lower limit is IMHO to low a weight for this rod to fish effectively. I can see it being perfect with 2 1/2oz plus a strip bait for fluking.

The rod is very light in weight and has a fast action and great sensitivity. No question in my mind that it'll be even better for bottom fishing and fluking than it is for bass chunking.

<FWIW, I found out a few days after our trip that Gary's scale was off by a few pounds so the fish were actually for the most part between 25# and 30#>

If you want to really save money you can pick up a Penn 200 Surfmaster, for pennies, or a Penn 140 Squidder for a few bucks more on Ebay. If any parts, bars, spool, base are green they can be replaced inexpensively and are available at Brielle B&T or at Mikes Reel Repair .com - or you can pick up Newell aftermarket parts and really build yourself a nice reel.

If you can spend a bit more an Abu 7000 would be a really nice choice.

For spinning gear a great inexpensive choice is the Penn 704, again short money on Ebay and virtually indestructible.
As for a boat spinning rod I'll have to pass that off to Roc, he's really the boat pro around here.

For the somebody might give a crap file

Suds my apologies for taking this off topic.
Its hard to keep track of who owns who. Shakespeare now owns penn. and all are owned by the parent company
http://www.k2inc.net/
k2 who merged with Jarden in April. 07
In January of 07. Penn was sold to Seastriker of Morehead City NC. and Master fishing tackle of California.
The new owners (Jerry Rodstein Master fishing tackle) and (Al Brister, Dick and Phylis Henry - Seastriker) purchased all the shares of Penn from the Henz family who owned and operated Penn for 70 years.
Apparantly Shakespeare then bought them out 2 weeks later . The parent company is K2.
