Default No bunker = No bass

If you Fish in New Jersey, Its time for you to pick up the phone. Please help.

This is historic.

With your help, more than 112,000 people wrote to the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC), demanding that the agency implement strong conservation measure and take action to conserve and rebuild Atlantic menhaden stocks.
After years of defending the most important fish in the sea, we may see some real results next Friday December 14th, when the ASMFC meets in Baltimore to set a coast wide catch limit for menhaden.
We only have a few more days to make sure our legislators know how much this vote means for recreational anglers and the Atlantic coastal resources that we care about!

Governor Chris Christie and Assemblyman Nelson Albano need to understand that bunker abundance must be restored coastwide to support striped bass, bluefish, and weakfish populations. Our catch is only as good as the bunker population is large.

Please make a call to Gov. Christie and Assemblyman Albano today!
Calls are better than emails.

Talking points for your call:

Menhaden (Bunker) are essential forage fish that provide food for marine predators like game fish, marine mammals, and seabirds. Menhaden support anglers and related businesses from Maine to Florida.

Anglers are an important constituency! Recreational anglers contributed $11 billion in sales to the U.S. economy in 2009, along with $3.7 billion in value added impacts, while supporting over 90,000 full and part-time jobs.

Anglers like us want to see a coast wide catch limit for menhaden for the first time in history.

Encourage them to support strong conservation measures implementing a cut of 25-50% to allow bunker stocks to rebuild back to historic levels of abundance for the species that depend on them.

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission must make a commitment to reach the target of 30 % MSP* in FIVE years or less, to ensure the future sustainability of menhaden.

The menhaden population has been reduced to a record low level because of industrial overfishing. Just 10 percent of the fish remain, compared to levels in the 1980s. Because of all the species that depend on menhaden, and all the recreational fishing businesses that menhaden supports, we canít afford to delay any longer. Say yes to the scientific evidence. Say yes to recreational anglers. Restore menhaden now!

*MSP= maximum spawning potential
