Welcome to the site. :D In Atlantic county most of the tackle shops will get bunker in seasonally. When the netters are netting them the shops will have fresh bunker. But not live. I believe in NJ you can possesss as many as 10 netted by your boat. A law Almost always not enforced. The bunker should arrive as soon as the water temp gets close to 60.

When the bunker start to run get yourself an old rod and reel and a weighted treble hook. Bunker will start to pop all over the harbors in big pods. Keep your eyes out for this kind of activity. Then cast and snag cast and snag. You will see guys doing this in the harbors. A five gallon pail will get you through an evening for livelining. A snagged bunker is a blast to bring in when you catch him sideways. But I've broken rods doing it so use an old one. Nothing better than fresh bloody live bunker. Cut a goove out of it from behind the skull to the dorsum. It will look like a bite off from a blue. Nice presentation for a fat lazy cow lurking below a boil.

Default BUNKER VS. TURKEY CLAMS?

ARE LIVE BUNKER BETTER THAN SURF TURKEYS OR TURKEY CLAMS? OR DOES IT JUST DEPEND ON TIME OF SEASON?

I would say its a matter of where your fishing. If the bottom is sandy I would go clams, if rocks I like bunker. Having said that I fish NY. and mostly rocky areas. Ive been most productive with bunker. But other guys especially Jersey and Rhode island guys swear by clams. Clams and worms are always a good bet for early to late spring for some reason.
I hope some of the Jersey guys chime in on this one here.

Default ON THE MONEY JIM

JIM I TALKED TO A LONG TIME FISHERMAN OF THE AREA HERE AND HE SAID YOU HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD. ONLY EXTRA INFO HE GAVE WAS TO USE THE BUNKER TOWARD EVENING FIRST BECAUSE OF THE NATURAL ACTION AND CAUSE OF HEAVIER NIGHT FEEDING. BUT HE SAID CLAM IS ALWAYS GOOD IF YOU CANT SCORE ANY LIVE BUNKER... EVEN A BUCKTAIL WITH A CHUNK OF CLAM WITH A SLOW REAL ACTION. MORAL OF HIS STORY WAS SWITCH IT UP AND DONT BE SCARED TO TRY NEW THINGS. SAID FISH ARE LIKE THE LADIES.... YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT THEY MIGHT WANT.
