Default springtime flats & muddy water techniques

I'm talking Westchester & up to through Dutchess: What are your favorite strategies & successes in these areas & conditions, particularly with artificials? How about live eels or riggies?

Blood worms don't excite me, and the herring situation is not good. Bunker arrive a little late, but it seems that meat is the way to go in the spring.

Thoughts?

I'm a bit more north and don't use artificials. But we fish mud flats sometimes. We go shallower than normal, anchor up, turn off ALL electronics, toss out live and chunk/cut Herring.

Sit back and be quiet ... wait for the sound of a screamming drag !

As a recent transplant from LI, it's been a little bit of an adjustment river-fishing. Until last year, I've been shore-bound and not used to most places kicking you out at night.

anyway, what'st eh deal with eels up here? Shops stock them or not really? I used Westchester Sports & Croton Bait for worms & herring, but didn't recall them having eels...

Maybe that will be my 2010 resolution- artificials and eels only. More fun casting anyway...

Best way in the upper Hudson two oz. egg sinker barrel swivel 50lb leader 8/0 hook nine inch live herring in that order. Use two rigs per man and very your depths, drift or drop the hook, thats a good start. IMHO fogetabout eels lures and any other such nonsence. Just don't work up here. So go get you a scap net and a stoolie and

Hey Finny out of curiosity, is the place you're scapping in the picture located in a certain creek that has a low train tressel and camps on the left and high cliffs on the right as you enter it with your boat? It reminds of a place a couple of buddies I used to work with at Price Chopper have taken me. I don't want to give the name away because I KNOW that scapping there is VERY effective, but I'm curious just the same.

Pardon my ignorance, but what's scapping? Trailers don't count as bait .

As in a Scap Net ... see Finny's pic above in the thread. It's a large net that lays flat, with poles attached, when you lure the Herring over the net, you lift a handle and the whole thing folds uppwards to trap all your bait.
