Default anybody use persimmon wood

Hey guys just wondering if persimmon wood is of any value to plugbuilders, its heavy and hard? How about heart pine, its pine but almost as dense as red oak,and last but not least eastern red(aromatic) cedar. The blanks of cedar and persimmion are 1 5/8 square x 8 inches long, the cedar weighs 6 oz the persimmon 10 oz,,the heart pine ins1 3/4 plus sq and weighs 9 oz...

here is the end view before I cut some off of the persimmon to get it close to the size of the cedar

Sam, The wood looks great. The cedar is definitely different that the stuff I get around here. I put a check in the mail to cover shipping. It's already on it's way to you so don't tell me not to bother. I appreciate you sending them to me. These are going to make some really nice plugs. You helped me solve a mystery on some wood I got from an old cloths line at my mothers house. The stuff is really old, but looked great when I cut it up. It is heart pine. The stuff is hard and spent at least 50 years in the weather with only a coat of paint on it. We replaced one side of the cloths line with pressure treated. The other side is still holding up strong and it's the same heart pine. I know that since I'm 50 and I remember the cloths line from when I was a kid.

It's an addiction when you look at every piece of wood and try to figure how it will swim. Mom was happy I fixed her cloths line. The old wood wasn't going to the dump. It still had life left in it.

Thats the only cedar we have here in SC guys.it dosent get real big,it has a lot of small limbs and its hard to get a "clear piece without knots, the knots makes the lumber pretty(but not good for a plug).a lot of cedar is used for pasture fence post.Theres a sawmill here that has started sawing and selling lumber, they use to just chip the trees for pet bedding.I dont know how soft the cedar you guys have up north is but this cedar is soft,so it 'should' turn great,(I guess, cause I am no turner).Rick, you didnt have to cover the shipping but I appreciate it,You will smell the cedar when you start working with it.I can hardly wait to see the plugs made from it...What did you think of the persimmion? I know NOTHING about plug building so I just throwed it in cause I know its something you cant buy at lowes or home depot.I got some holly wood also,I wish I had sent you a block of it.My fishing buddies give me a hard time here because I experiment with a lot of stuff, they say I wouldt put nothing else on when your catching with what you have but I like to try to find and new hot lure.I used the cordell"wallydiver" to catch some striper last spring, not many fishermen in SC have 'Wally divers" in thier box...sam

I think the persimmion is hard and should make a good plug, once I figure out what type to make from it. I'll put it in a bucket of water and see how it floats compared to some of the other species of blanks I have. I have a feeling that it's going to have some really nice grain when I start taking chips. Might be to pretty to paint, so it might end up with a clear epoxy finish.

Heres what our Eastern Red Cedar looks like. I had some 17" wide boards cut out of these.
And have a lot of 2"x2" and 3"x3" stock out of it also.
Pete

Pete, here's some on the wall at my house tongue and groove V joint

(had to get the striper in the pic since this is a striper website!!))Ours here in SC dont get as big as yours,It is rare to get a 10 inch wide board .I never have saw one that would square 17 inches. Most of the time here when they get real big they will have bad spots in them,hollor/rotten places.I've got about 700 bd ft in my house and just a very few 10 in wide..Where'd that big one come from,on a hill or in a bottom? We got some here that dont get much size and the heart is more purpleish than reddish. You ever seen any like that?
