When I started fishing for Stripers in the Hudson a few years ago, I was lucky enough to speak to a few old timer-types and learn some of what they knew, and I distinctly remember one of them telling me that there are almost like different subspecies of Stripers that come up the river- with where they generally choose to spawn as the differing factor.

In other words, a different "subspecies" spawns around Newburgh and Cornwall, another "subspecies" spawns up by Catskill, another by where hung4wheeler fishes, and so on.

Judging from my own limited experience, it seems like larger fish are consistently caught earlier up by hung4wheeler and in the Catskill area-a quick look through previous years' posts should back that up.

I guess those particular groups of Stripers are just genetically inclined to be up there and catchable earlier than the ones we in our area have access to.

I mean I read hung's posts, and it is like he is fishing on another planet with the regularity that he and his companions catch nice Stripers we would kill for down here. Of course he's got mad skills, but it helps if the fish are there to catch. More power to ya hung!

I am definetly gonna try fishing up his way more this season, because as you know, around here (Newburgh/Cornwall), unless things are particularly hot, it's more like deer hunting than fishing insofar as how infrequently nice fish are caught-much patience is necessary.

Hope this helps ease the pain! They'll get here eventually!

yea its like fish that are born in a certain area, over the years, they migrate bak up to that place to spawn...so hopefully that group gets over here
